The United States will ban the import of cigars and rum and will prohibit American travelers from staying in facilities owned by the Cuban government.: Donald Trump announced it at the White House in a ceremony to commemorate the Bay of Pigs invasion, the failed attempt to overthrow the government of Fidel Castro under the leadership of the CIA. The president’s move has an electoral flavor, to win over the Hispanic electorate in Florida, one of the states in the balance.
“Today, as part of our ongoing fight against communist oppression, I announce that the Treasury Department will prohibit American travelers from staying on Cuban government property,” he said. “We will also further restrict the importation of American alcohol and tobacco,” he added.
“Very soon we will see a free Cuba, it will happen very soon,” Trump said during the ceremony honoring the veterans of the Bay of Pigs invasion and the 40 years of the Mariel exodus, which brought 120,000 Cubans to Miami. “My administration supports all the citizens of Cuba, Nigaragua and Venezuela in their fight for freedom and we work for the day that this becomes a completely free hemisphere for the first time in history,” he continued. “There is a lot going on now that I can’t tell you, but I will soon.
