They greeted him with the triple whistle, with which Daniele De Santis put an end to the football matches he refereed. So Lecce said goodbye to Daniele, the Lecce Serie C referee who was wearing the uniform he used to wear on Sundays on the day of his funeral. The Archbishop of Lecce, Monsignor Michele Seccia, who officiated the funeral in the Cathedral of the Salentora capital, prayed that the murderer who so prematurely broke the lives of Daniele and his girlfriend Eleonora Manta would be constituted. “The hope is that he will repent because even Cain could not find peace,” he said. The 33-year-old’s coffin arrived at the church passing between two wings of young aspiring career directors from the Lecce section of which Daniele was a member. They wore a white T-shirt with the image of Daniele busy in a field and the inscription: “Have a good trip and then rest if you can.” It was they who whistled three times out of the coffin. Also present were representatives of the Association of Referees led by President Marcello Nicchi. Eleonora’s funeral, 30 years old, dressed in her mother’s wedding dress, took place in Seclì, her hometown: yellow roses and white balloons that were left free towards the sky accompanied the last farewell.
