Marina Lorenzon surrounded by children during a trip

TREVISO – A very strong pain in the abdomen and a cry. The call to Suem, the resuscitation attempt, the rush to the hospital. And an emergency C-section in a desperate attempt to make at least little Kaylen live. But nothing to do. Thus, a few days after the first Christmas as a mother, the life of Marina Lorenzon and the son who was supposed to give birth in 10 days. A tragedy that leaves an entire community speechless and that occurred in a couple of hours quite suddenly. A 38-year-old doctor in zootechnical sciences, Marina had returned from London to her family’s home in San Biagio di Callalta, in the interior of Treviso, with her partner, the Cuban musician Gerardo De Armas for the birth.

THE INTERVENTION OF SUEM

But on Tuesday afternoon, during a prenatal course, she felt a very severe pain in her abdomen. Suem intervened immediately, but her condition seemed immediately desperate: perhaps a ruptured abdominal aneurysm caused severe bleeding. Once the doctors arrived at the Ca ‘Foncello hospital, they attempted an emergency cesarean section to save the baby at 37 weeks of pregnancy. But the baby’s heart was still too. Giuliano and Mariateresa’s parents and older sister Elena, 41, a mother of two, don’t know how to make peace. “I can’t believe it: I hope she wakes up at any moment,” repeats her older sister, who had convinced Marina and Gerardo to return to Italy for childbirth, also due to the pandemic. Curious, a citizen of the world, Marina was a free spirit. Doctor of zoological sciences, a brief stint as mayoral candidate for the 5 Star Movement in San Biagio di Callalta, two years ago she had chosen to leave Italy and go to live and work in London. Here last year he met Gerardo De Armas, a Cuban percussionist who works in the world of African-American music. And, together, they had decided to become parents.

JOY

“She was in seventh heaven – continues her sister Elena – she was a very tender aunt, loved by my two children, and she would have been a wonderful mother.” The family had always supported her. “She loved to travel and learn about other cultures, we had been at her home in London, but during the last weeks of her pregnancy we had asked her to come back and stay with the family. We would have supported it. Marina had not experienced any health problems during her pregnancy. “It was fine, that’s why we are shocked. My mother saw her leave the house at 3 in the afternoon. And it has never returned. The family is known and loved in the country. The father, a former metallurgist, is a pillar of the parish choir and soul of the volunteer service. It was he who had wanted the baby to be born here, at a time as delicate as the pandemic. And so, Marina and Gerardo arrived in Italy a month ago and settled in their parents’ house. After giving birth, they wanted to return to London. Gerardo is well known in the international arena for Afro-Cuban rumba. Marina would follow him with the little one on tour. Today wishes, hopes and a feeling of emptiness are mixed as in a sudden blackout. It is up to her sister Elena to try to strengthen the family and respect Marina’s wishes. «I know that for my sister this son was the greatest joy and I want to make an appeal: she would have liked to rest with him, embraced, in the same coffin. I ask that your wish be respected ».
