Professor Mussini: “We need three weeks off for our territory” Bonaccini in the Christmas holidays: “Not to release everyone, but we are evaluating vacancies”
«The solution for Modena? We have to become a red province for 2/3 weeks. Professor Cristina Mussini, director of the department of infectious diseases of the Polyclinic and the main expert on viruses in the province is clear and direct: “For weeks we have been the worst province of Emilia Romagna in terms of infections: the best remedy to reverse the course would be the introduction of restrictive measures for our territory. I’ve been repeating it for days.
Yesterday, Modena registered 250 new infections, a number much lower than in recent days, but certainly not improving the overall picture. Taking October 1 as a time benchmark, new infections were 15,500. A number that becomes important when compared with the other provinces: in Reggio there were 10,500, in Parma 5,357. Certainly minor basins, but the accounts still do not add up in this second wave.
“We have analyzed the numbers and have tried to give an explanation – emphasizes Professor Mussini – finding two main reasons. The first is of a geographical nature. In March, the most affected areas were Carpi and Sassuolo; The city of Modena was indeed “virgin”. In recent weeks it has been the capital that has been most affected. More population means more infections. Then there is a follow-up problem: “Only symptomatic ones are tested – he adds – and when faced with an epidemic when making those decisions, this is exactly what happens.” The laboratories are at full capacity: “Virology cannot do more. They are “killing” themselves for work ». The example to follow is the Chinese: “Buffers for all: it is the best solution”.
The increase in infections has seriously affected hospitalizations, significantly increasing the pressure on hospitals: “We have more hospitalized today than the peak in March. I no longer know how to repeat it: our province must become a red zone ».
Criticism of the Modena model also came yesterday from the honorable Carlo Giovanardi: “It is impressive to scroll through the list of dozens and dozens of conferences, festivals, events that took place in Modena and its province in September and October: Festival of Unity National, the Philosophy Festival, the International Insect Encounter, the National Reading Festival and the Modena or Oktober Festival ».
And tomorrow the possibility of reopening will be discussed again, when the decision of the Government on the colors of the Regions is expected. The overall picture for Emilia Romagna has improved so much that a return to the yellow zone is possible. At that time, Professor Mussini’s appeal could be taken first by the Region with an ad hoc measure. Hypothesis at the difficult moment to pass, so much so that yesterday Governor Stefano Bonaccini -who is better after 20 days of isolation- during his speech at Uno Mattina in Rai, he returned to two weeks ago, when there was a passage in the area orange a few hours after Minister Roberto Speranza signed the ordinance that introduces additional limitations to the yellow zone, a choice that Veneto and Friuli Venezia-Giulia also made then. A decision that surprised Bonaccini: «I found it a bit curious – he admits – but I have not made controversial statements. We have worked hard to try to respond to the concerns and needs of citizens. Then he addressed the issue of Christmas, which remains unknown: “We are evaluating, we will have a Conference of the Regions next week – explains Bonaccini, who invites caution – I think it is necessary to reconcile two needs, on the one hand to prevent the The epidemic also becomes economic and social, but without a doubt we must avoid the whole free, because we are still within the curve of the pandemic ».
But especially for the governor there is still time to decide: «We will have to make assessments with respect to the real trend. We are still at the end of November, there are still a few days to evaluate what could be the best balance condition, putting health first. If there can be any opening, it must be done as safely as possible. ‘ However, there is confidence in the president’s words: “Two days ago we had 400 fewer infected, we even have the minus sign in hospitalized both in intensive care and in Covid wards. The restrictive measures start to work. ‘
And indeed, the latest figures have been encouraging, even for Modena, even if the one-day figure can never be taken as a reference for the trend. Yesterday there were 250 infections in the Gemini province, which required only one hospitalization in intensive care and 14 in the other Covid rooms. The death toll still weighs terribly: another 13 dead, the youngest a 62-year-old Pavullo.
And even looking at the region, there are signs of a slowdown: out of 18,500 swabs made, 2,130 are positive. The other factors remain high: 54 deaths (including those in Modena), 249 patients in intensive care (+6) and 2,763 in other Covid departments (+40). –
