(ANSA) – WASHINGTON, SEPTEMBER 13 – Microsoft announced that its offer to buy Chinese TikTok was rejected by the company that owns ByteDance, on the eve of the September 15 deadline set by Donald Trump to ban the popular application.
The move, the New York Times reveals, leaves Oracle, one of the few Silicon Valley companies publicly allied with Trump, as the only company in the race to buy. ByteDance has indicated that Oracle will be its “technology partner”, but it is unclear if that means it will take over most of the application.
“We are convinced that our proposal would have been good for TikTok users while protecting national security interests,” Microsoft said in a statement. It is not clear why the offer was rejected.
