There’s a new big snowfall from this afternoon until tomorrow night that could really do a lot

The expected snowfall in Trentino is beginning, a few hours before. After the abundant whitewash on December 28, new accumulations are coming throughout the province. it will snow today and tomorrow, and in any case the climate will be altered until the Befana.

The official Meteotrentino newsletter explains: «Today covered with initially weak and scattered rains in the morning, more generalized from the afternoon-evening. An average of 10-25 mm is expected with higher values in the south and as many cm of snow above 700 m. Snow or a mixture of snow and rain should affect a large part of the valley soils, except probably the Upper Garda and the southern part of the Adige Valley. Maximum temperatures decreasing with limited thermal excursion. Winds at moderate altitude from the southern quadrants, weak variables in the valley ».

For tomorrow, Saturday, January 2: «Covered with widespread rains. On average, values of 20-40 mm and locally higher are expected in stau areas exposed to southeast flows. Snow in the morning around 400-500 m, but it is possible locally at lower altitudes, especially in the narrower and less windy valleys, and gradually increasing throughout the day to about 700-900 m. Slightly rising temperatures with limited thermal excursion. Winds to the southeast strong at high altitude and variable in the valley mostly weak ».

Then on Sunday January 3 «Very cloudy in the morning with the possibility of some weak residual rainfall; the rooms are lit during the day. Temperatures slightly rising. Weak winds from the south at high altitude and variable winds in the valley.

Since yesterday, meteorology enthusiasts have devoted themselves to snow quantity forecast, with theoretical probabilistic exercises of “toto-accumulations”.

Giacomo Poletti He had fun creating this table, inviting as always, however, to take it as an exercise, and to contact the bodies prepared for forecasts.

So too Filippo Orlando who on Facebook explains: “The” lam “WRF, produced by the University of Trento Based on the US GFS calculation model, this morning gives more abundant snow even at low altitude for the next few days (most of the predicted races clearly paint winter scenarios at least until Epiphany).

The attached map is quite eloquent. Represents the accumulation of (fresh) snow on the ground, calculated in mm of equivalent rain. Note that each mm corresponds to approximately one cm of snow, sometimes even 1.5 cm. This would work (the conditional is always required) between New Years evening and 1am on January 2nd. And, mind you, here we would not be even half snow, because this model does not go further, in time.

By the way, we are talking about a 48/72 hour forecast, so the reliability is quite high, the only unknown, especially for day 2, is still the temperature a bit at the limit that, as always, can mark the difference between a beautiful snowfall and a depressing downpour. Anyway, at least by New Years evening, it should snow almost everywhere. After that, to see what day 2 does according to this ‘lam’, we have to wait for tomorrow … I anticipate that I expect at least the same, even if the snow level could start to rise in the south valley from Trentino. This means that progressively snow would give way to rain in places like Riva del Garda and Arco, probably Avio and Ala, maybe even Rovereto. This, however, not before having seen about twenty cm more, which would add to the current mantle.

Trento, on the other hand, in my humble opinion, will resist until the end of the snowfall and in this case it would be literally buried ».

«I think it is appropriate to alert the mayor again … What awaits us, considering the previous situation, will be completely exceptional for Trento, especially in relation to what we are used to seeing in recent years. If certain modeling hypotheses hold true, we could even end up with a square meter of snow on the ground. ‘ And he updates this morning: «It will have two different phases: the first today until tomorrow morning with“ democratic ”snow, in the valley and homogeneous, more humid or rainy from Riva to Vezzano. The second, tomorrow Saturday afternoon 2, will see the snowfall concentrate more in Valsugana, turning into rain in the Adige and Val dei Laghi valleys.
However, it will continue to snow tomorrow, in Trento probably part of the morning, then on Saturday afternoon the currents turn from the south / east bringing snow in Valsugana up to 600/800 m and rain in Val d’Adige “
