“There are still places for Covid. Too much ‘terrorism’ on us”

“To date (Wednesday, editor’s note) we have already increased the number of beds dedicated to Covid patients by 7% compared to Tuesday, there are places availability in all five Covid areas, including the care unit intensive “. This was stated by the extraordinary commissioner of the ‘Santa María’ hospital in Terni, Pasquale Chiarelli. “As I have said on other occasions,” he explains, “the issue is not only patient acceptance but also discharge and proper care and assistance for patients. If you can go to less intensive care facilities or at home, go. It is a rotation characterized by the utmost respect for all steps, taking into account continuity in terms of care and assistance. Also at the regional level, we are reflecting on possible combinations between hospitals and health companies, to promote immediate collaboration.

SPECIAL COVID – UMBRIAON

Pasquale Chiarelli with Donatella Tesei

“There is terrorism that hurts everyone. Especially those who work “

On the issue of expanding the network of Covid hospitals in Umbria, in addition to those already identified, according to Chiarelli, “all hospitals that are suitable to receive virus-positive patients are doing so. Those who continue to say that nothing should be touched on their own territory should ask: ‘why does everyone do and you don’t?’ (The reference to the ongoing debate in Spoleto, ed) seems obvious. It seems to me then that, at the level of citizen representation, there are those who are carrying out terrorism: announcements of ‘dismissed’, the collapse of the Terni hospital, there are no more places available. I with my staff are faced with statements that seem to come from another planet, by those who do not know how to work here. The situation is certainly serious but we face it as professionals and without panic. Citizens must always be heard and understood, but whoever has responsibilities of representation granted by the citizens / voters themselves must behave seriously. Describing the Terni hospital in a certain way – the extraordinary commissioner of the Santa Maria attacks – is irresponsible and is a terrorism that we cannot afford. It hurts everyone and even those who, here, spend every day in the workplace, making great sacrifices, with competence, commitment and even risks. I ask respect for those who work and I hope that these people are remembered even when we get out of this emergency, which will not be a short but a long marathon.

“All patients are welcome”

Another issue is the unemployment of the ‘ordinary’ services, the non-urgent ones that are a fundamental part of the health services for citizens: “The person is such regardless of the pathology and we take care of the sick, Covid or not.” Covid – explains Chiarelli -. The hospital gives answers to people based on their needs and priorities. There are those who go to the emergency room and wait hours because in front of them they have more priority emergencies than their own. And we must wait. Then there are things that are pointed out as defects but for me they are only merits: the fact that Covid patients come to the emergency room in Terni and are stationed, if not emergencies, in the area dedicated to them, means that they are facing the individual situations one at a time, dedicating the necessary time to each one. On the other hand, not all of them can be transferred to the room immediately. The question is: have they been accepted? And so far everyone has been welcome.

“I bet everything who works”

On what could happen in the next few days: «I cannot exclude anything – Chiarelli observes – also due to the very nature of the task that has been entrusted to me. However, we are all called to an important collective act of responsibility. I focus on a serious government of the hospital, looking at the regional government and the competent councilor, collaborating with all the regional bodies and my colleagues. I focus everything on the person, on the trust that must be placed in those who work, from the administrative staff to those who attend -Oss, nurse or technician-, from the hospital doctor to the university. This is the treasure that can allow us to overcome the Covid emergency.
