ANCONA – It happens that a student feels positive in SARS-CoV-2 and, although she is asymptomatic, the director of the institution she attends is forced to keep half of the school at home. 20 classes in quarantine.

Not only the classmates and teachers who have rotated in the same classroom as the infected girl, quarantined by the Department of Prevention ofAsur, but also 19 other classes, for which as of today (until October 3) integrated distance learning is triggered by the practical impossibility of the school to supervise them in the absence of the ten teachers held in preventive isolation. It takes place at the Vittorio Emanuele II institute in Jesi, where almost two thirds of the 33 classes have returned to video lessons as in the days of the confinement. For two weeks, the standard anti-contagion isolation period, two classes from the classical high school and up to 18 from the humanities and social economy high school will follow the online classes from home.
The director, the engineer Floriano Tittarelli, was not unprepared. After spending practically the whole summer in the institute, with the meter in hand to square the spaces of the classrooms with the minimum distance between students, the director had also prepared a plan B with a view to returning to classes, alternating between teaching in presence and from a distance, prepared in every detail both to face any transport problem (avoided for now) and to avoid losing school days in front of classes forced to isolate themselves due to the appearance, predictable as the autumn rain, of a positive case among students.
The domino effect, in the case of Jesi’s high school, has been amplified to involve more than 400 students who will give lectures at a distance: the class that the positive student attends is quarantined, therefore in isolation, all the others are not limited, except those of connecting to the computer with the prof. An obligatory choice, as the director Tittarelli explains in a circular, “due to the absence of the teachers involved in the quarantine ordered by the Prevention Department.”
In total, there are about ten teachers kept in preventive isolation, and considering that each teacher has 3 to 9 classes, the hours of operation have expanded like wildfire, involving half the school. “This measure is necessary because it is not possible to replace all the teachers at this time,” explains the director in the circular, in which he asks the students to face the situation with serenity and a spirit of collaboration. Without a teacher in the classroom, it is impossible to control classes made up mostly of students who are still minors, with profiles of responsibility that would make any school principal lose sleep.
The Prevention Department of Vast Area 2 was immediately activated to start the epidemiological investigation and provide all the useful information to contain any possible outbreak, while yesterday afternoon the school carried out an extraordinary cleanup of the entire building with a company. specialized. The student’s classmates and teachers have been swabbed and await the test result. “At the moment everyone is fine, there are no particular alarms,” said the Councilor for Educational Services Marisa Campanelli yesterday.
Meanwhile, however, the case of the Vittorio Emanuele II institute in Jesi is emblematic of the repercussions that can derive, in the routine of a school year complicated by an infinity of anti-Covid protocols, from a simple isolated positive case. All for a student who, without symptoms of the disease, went quietly to class without lightness or insensitive attitudes.
Cases of this type could occur in the coming weeks in other schools in Marche, given that the Coronavirus in Marche continues to circulate, although with a speed of spread lower than the national average.
Yesterday, the Gores Marche newsletter reported 18 new positive cases registered by examining 686 swabs from the new diagnostic route (1 positive test out of 38). The total number of infections in Marche since the beginning of the epidemic amounts to 7,769, with a daily increase of 0.23%. The province with the most cases yesterday was Ancona (8) followed by Pesaro Urbino (6) and Ascoli Piceno (2), while another 2 cases originate outside the region. Cases from the last round include 2 returns from abroad (Albania and Pakistan), 8 household contacts, 1 symptomatic subjects, 6 close contacts of positive cases, and 1 case in the verification phase.
