Three commissioners in ten days. This is the tragicomedy that is staged in Calabria after the resignations of Saverio Cotticelli, Giuseppe Zuccatelli and the former rector of La Sapienza, Eugenio Gaudio. We talked about it with former MPs Guido Crosetto, co-founder of Fratelli d’Italia, and Marco Rizzo, secretary of the Communist Party.
Conte has taken full responsibility for “the Calabrian mess”. In your opinion, what are the most serious errors of the government in this matter?
Crosetto: “The biggest mistake is that when a problem arises, you have to solve it immediately, having the tools. And yet you have to fix it by sticking your head into it. When something happens like what motivated the removal of the previous commissioner, the next name must be chosen with all the trappings and attentions of the case, not superficially.
Rizzo: “You can make the mistake once, in a commissary. But here is the reiteration of an improbable character from a medical point of view, as far as Cotticelli is concerned, which had been confirmed a few days before his blunder. So there was a double mistake about the same person. Then there was a subsequent denier error and finally there was a third error because it is assumed that when you make an appointment you have the approval of the designated person. There are three or four errors not in the choice of the doorman for a building, but in the management of public health in one of the most disastrous Regions. When Conte says, ‘I take responsibility,’ I should resign as prime minister. “
Why did this situation occur in Calabria?
Crosetto: “In Calabria we are not in this situation because of the Conte government. Calabria has been a commissioner for too long, probably because there has been poor management of health care by all parties and those who pay the consequences are the citizens ”.
Rizzo: “There is an atavistic and structural public health problem in our country. In Calabria and other southern regions there is an additional problem called patronage, neglect, infiltration of organized crime. Precisely for this reason, the government’s attention should be even greater. Their responsibilities are enormous ”.
What do you think of the agreement between the Gino Strada Emergency and civil protection?
Crosetto: “I thought they should send a commissioner, not an occupation army.”
Rizzo: “Emergency is an NGO that operates in areas where there are armed conflicts, emergencies or catastrophes. The fact that the Italian government relies on an organization of this type for a part of the management means that there is a factual recognition that the Italian State, in an area of its territory, cannot operate except by calling an organization to go to Afghanistan. What does this mean? That Calabria is like Afghanistan. It’s a terrible thing, it’s the worst
The president of the Calabria region says that “Calabria is not Afghanistan, they treat us like a fourth world, we do not need missionaries.” Do you agree?
Crosetto: “In many Regions the President of the Region himself has been appointed as health commissioner. That it happens in some Regions and not in others is a biased judgment that I would think well before giving ”.
Rizzo: “I participated in a televised debate with Spirlì in which I asked him about the regional respirator contest and he thought I was referring to a lack of the national government and he says: ‘I don’t know if these contests have been held’. The local politics of this man does not seem to me to go in the direction of the competition ”.
How can Calabria be revived?
Crosetto: “When the Calabrians take over our destiny. I refuse to accept the fact that in Calabria there is no person capable of carrying out this task ”.
Rizzo: “Calabria can only recover with labor and public health policies. The effective and efficient public must return, not the one known in the last 30 years in Calabria, otherwise we will enter the mud that we see today ”.
