On the occasion of Workers’ Day, the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, published a message for Italians:
Let’s live this May 1 with the thought of Italy that wants to build its tomorrow.
There can be no republic without work, as the first article of our Constitution solemnly says.
Work has been the engine of social, economic and rights growth in these seventy-four years of the Republic.
Because work is a condition of freedom, dignity and autonomy for people. It allows everyone to build their own future and make the whole community more united.
It must be reaffirmed with determination in the current situation, in which the spread of the virus has hit our people hard, forcing us to temporarily freeze our activities. In Italy, as throughout the world, the consequences of the pandemic put many jobs at risk.
In this context, the value of work and, in particular, stands out even more the work done by doctors, nurses, other health workers, pharmacists, and many of them fell into the performance of their duties. The work of law enforcement agencies, the military, operators in the logistics and transportation, distribution, essential production chains, education system, despite many difficulties, has enabled Our country, day after day, do not stop and keep going, even if it runs at reduced speed.
Finally it is possible to gradually overcome the restrictions. Now let’s take a look at recovery: everyone’s efforts should be directed toward it, without distraction or neglect. Starting from the consolidation of the results obtained so far in the fight against the virus, to a fair, effective and timely support to families and productive activities, to those who have been unemployed and without income, to keep intact all the resources of our capital social and to allow the organization of companies and the offer of services to survive and make a qualitative leap, with prudent options, in the awareness that they are destined to affect the quality of life of each family, at the same times and rates of daily life. of people
Starting with work, the way of being of a mature and strong country like Italy must be redesigned.
The factory, the workplaces, have guided and shaped the ways of life in our towns and cities, and the very work of the institutions called to guarantee the realization of the political, economic and social solidarity provided for in the Constitution.
The setback we have suffered pushes us to accelerate the path towards a change that knows how to value and not suffer phenomena such as globalization and the digitization of the economy, with prospective options, to which important decisions already made and in progress can contribute in a way that effective. definition of the European Union.
Much will change in the life of our societies. This change will have to be expertly managed so that the new phase does not lead to conditions of greater precariousness and exclusion, but rather to the opportunity, on the contrary, to effectively face old delays such as those of work for young people and women, particularly acute in the southern areas. Like undeclared or illegal work, get out of the need for justice and against excruciating exploitation.
The role of entrepreneurs (small and medium-sized companies, freelancers and large companies) seems central, along with that of research, in this process of redesigning production and distribution chains.
Today, as we celebrate this May 1 in a different way than usual, we cannot fail to recognize the important objectives of social justice achieved through the battles of the workers and their union organizations, effective instruments of progress and equality.
The union confederations have dedicated this day to working on security, to make the recovery prospect solid and not fleeting.
There cannot be, and there is not, an opposition between safety, health and work.
The gradual recovery of our social life and many economic activities has begun.
Recovery is possible because in the almost two previous months we managed to mitigate the danger of the epidemic. We must defend this result to protect our health.
The sacrifices made so far must not be made in vain if we want to regain the conditions of increasing serenity without being forced to step back.
We must not forget the anguish of the previous weeks, under the violent and rapid aggression of the virus, nor that we have exceeded two hundred thousand infections and that every day we have to mourn a few hundred victims.
This requires a responsible climate of fair collaboration between institutions and institutions.
I know that we can trust the sense of responsibility of our fellow citizens, manifested, in this period, in an admirable measure for its almost totality, so that, in the new conditions, we continue to behave with the necessary prudence.
The indications – reasonable and clear – from government institutions are necessary but, in addition to their respect, the spontaneous ability to adopt behaviors consistent with the common responsibility for health safety is above all decisive.
We went through a period passage full of difficulties. We can overcome them.
To all the workers, to the Stars of Merit of Work, generally delivered throughout Italy on this occasion, the warmest regards and the wish for a speedy recovery.
