Ema, the European Medicines Agency were consulted: Biontech and Pfizer registered the application for authorization to market the vaccine in Europe. The answer should arrive on December 29. The same process was initiated by Moderna for its biological drug against Coronavirus. The US company is expected to have the pass around January 12. While on a global scale pharmaceutical companies are moving to complete the bureaucratic aspects related to their products for immunity to Sars-CoV-2, Italy says that it is ready to start the vaccination campaign.

Or rather, the extraordinary commissioner Domenico Arcuri, on December 1, made a public announcement: the executive vaccination plan is ready and will go into operation as soon as the vaccines have the necessary authorizations. The estimated time for the start of the first administrations falls at the end of January 2021. As for the amount, it is “202 million dose of vaccine ”, available already in the first quarter of the new year. This is what was leaked from the meeting at Palazzo Chigi among the majority group leaders, in which Roberto Speranza illustrated the vaccination plan.

The Health Minister added that each dose, according to current knowledge, “needs a booster and we do not know how long the immunity lasts.” The meeting, which was also attended by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, also presented the order of priority with which to distribute the doses. We’ll start with RSA doctors, healthcare workers, and staff. At the same time, the first beneficiaries will be those over 80 years old, then they will move to the age range of 70 to 80 and gradually to the other ranges. In addition to the principle of registration, so-called essential workers will also have a preferential path, including actors from the school world.

During the meeting, Speranza would also have given a specific range of dates for the arrival of the different types of vaccines in Italy. For example, the Pfizer product should arrive “between January 23 and 26” and the doses “will go to 300 – storage points – identified, which are directly hospitals ». The minister also stressed the importance of “not matching the third wave – of Coronavirus – with the vaccination campaign.” Hence the need, expressed by Speranza, to insist on restrictive measures to bend the epidemiological curve.

The point about the mandatory nature of vaccines remains firm: the government does not intend to impose the administration of the biological drug, but to proceed with a massive media persuasion campaign to achieve herd immunity, which would be obtained with the vaccination of 40 million of the Italians. To comply with the vaccination campaign of this magnitude, large public spaces, gymnasiums and exhibition halls will be used. All management of the vaccination program, from distribution to follow-up, will be centralized. Finally, Speranza reiterated that the doses will be assigned according to precise medical and scientific decisions. Politics will take a step back in this area.
