COVID-19 me schools, the great heart of the pandemic raises new questions every day to solve. And this time we have to understand whether it is right or wrong to allow the brothers and sisters of students who have been quarantined into the classroom because they came into contact with a positive companion virus. The condition is far from being limited to a few cases both in Rome and in the vast majority of Italian cities. This happens: the relatives of a child in home isolation, because their class has tested positive for coronavirus, are defined as “secondary contacts” based on health protocols and therefore are not subject to fiduciary quarantine until the child’s positivity ended up in isolation. What does that mean?
THE METHOD
They can go to school, leave the house, meet friends and for their parents go to work. But what is the risk? For many virologists, the situation should not be underestimated, directors are practically inundated with requests for clarification, families on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Why – this is the reasoning of many parents – if I have three children and one of the three is isolated after coming into contact with a positive, is it appropriate for the others to go to school? “Technically, until the isolated child, the so-called ‘primary case’, is recognized as positive by means of a quick or molecular swab, the others can come out. And it happens from kindergartens to secondary schools.” My son – says Marina C.- attends the second year of the Virgilio Linguistic Lyceum in Rome, one of his friends has his brother in isolation but he attends school regularly, it is strange because we do not know if the brother is positive and if therefore he has also contracted the virus and can be contagious.

THE NUMBERS
In Lazio, although the cases of positive students are low, the situation is not entirely rosy. In the Region there are 750,000 students, the positives as of October 14 are 848 but, according to the Regional School Directorate, there are 12,749 (the highest number nationwide), in home isolation. And not all of these children are naturally just children: they have brothers and sisters who go to school. “A companion of my son enrolled in kindergarten – says a mother from Boccea (a northern suburb of Rome) – has his brother in isolation but he arrives at his mother in the morning when he accompanies him, he also arrives with his son who should be in quarantine And there he said that since they can go out it makes no sense to have his son at home as well because he would not know who to leave him with, do you realize? ».
Then short circuits infiltrate this scenario. Pia De Vito, another mother with three children enrolled in three different schools: “In the nursery of the smallest” A Thousand Colors “a couple tested positive and therefore the class went into quarantine but I also have two other children, one enrolled in elementary school and the oldest of the Seneca classic high school. Nobody from ASL told me what to do and since I am a smart worker, I preferred to have all my children at home. Not all parents keep all the children they have at home as a precaution if any of them is isolated because they came into contact with a positive but also to obtain the reports of the swab takes days ”.

This is, in fact, the problem within the problem: the lack of speed of results for the so-called “primary cases”. “Isolated children should be examined as soon as possible,” says Maurizio Sanguinetti, director of the laboratory and department of infectious sciences at Agostino Gemelli university hospital. But “the delays these days in which 20,000 tampons are made a day – explains Enrico Di Rosa, head of the health service of ASL Roma – it is useless to deny that there are any”. The risk? “Having unknown positives living with brothers and sisters who go to school,” sums up Cristina Costarelli, vice president of the National Association of Directors of Rome and Lazio and director of Newton Scientific High School. “We cannot quarantine secondary school contacts, we need quick responses in primary school, in school when there are brothers and sisters of students in quarantine I put the class in distance education for a few days but more than this it cannot be done.”
