The phenomenon was caused by the smoke generated by the great fire known as “Fuego del bear”, which broke out in recent weeks at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The great mass of smoke has risen to an altitude of more than 12,000 meters, where the temperature is very low. As meteorologist Craig Shoemaker explained to New York Times, the clouds that have covered San Francisco Bay are composed of ice and ash: the latter tends to absorb the light radiation closest to blue but allows red and orange to pass through completely.

The anomalous light from the San Francisco Bay was reminiscent of science fiction movies, particularly of 2017. Blade Runner 2049, in which the protagonist played by Ryan Gosling moved in a world surrounded by a very similar light: a Reddit user assembled the soundtrack of the film in the videos filmed by the drones, with a remarkable effect.
