According to the instructions of the Ministry of Health, it must be worn at the entrance of the school, on the stairs, in the hallways, during recess, to go to the bathroom and when standing on all occasions when spacing is not possible. one meter. The Scientific Technical Committee makes a distinction between large and small. For elementary school children, take off the mask on the desk. It also has a didactic value: to facilitate learning and relational development, the mask can be removed in a static condition (children sitting at the desk) respecting the distance of at least one meter and the absence of situations that provide the possibility of aerosolization ( how to sing). However, for middle and high school students, the mask is not required on the desk. at least while the current epidemiological situation of low viral circulation lasts.
Which mask
According to health experts, students must wear a surgical or community mask of their own equipment, except for children under 6 years of age and disabled students whose condition makes it impossible to use this device. The CTS recommends the surgery, as the government will distribute 11 million a day to schools (cost: more than a million euros a day, more than five a week). But she did not want to impose the obligation for three reasons: the first is that if by chance the school does not have it for everyone, the purchase at the pharmacy would be borne by the parents. The second reason is linked to didactics and the psychological aspect: since even cloth ones act as a barrier, especially for younger children, the use of colored and light masks is more suitable than those of hospital devices. Finally, there is a logistical problem: who distributes the masks at the entrance? An operator would be needed to monitor and stop noncompliant. But since it was decided not to measure the fever to avoid queues at the entrance, the same happens with the mask.

If students walk from home to school, they do not need to wear a mask. If, on the contrary, they use public transport (buses, trams, metro or trains) then they are obliged to take it: in this case too any type of mask is allowed.
Teacher masks
However, the use of the surgical mask is contemplated for the teaching staff and the auxiliary and secretarial personnel, since they are persons subject to the prevention regulations of public administration workers. The mask should be changed every 4 hours. At the desk, during the explanation, the teacher can remove it, also to facilitate communication with students. For this reason, the indication was given to leave a space between the desk and the first desk that doubles the safety distance between the desks: with students at least 2 meters, the teacher should not run any particular risk.
Younger children
For infants and toddlers and preschool centers, the mask is not provided. Instead, operators and teachers will be able to use additional devices such as visors and gloves in higher risk situations. The CTS is evaluating the possibility of equipping teachers with transparent masks that make the face and mouth visible and that help to interact with the little ones.
More drastic measures
These rules do not necessarily last all year and everywhere. There may be situations that could lead to a modification of the CTS recommendations. If in a Region or in a Municipality there is an outbreak or a very important increase in cases, the health authority, which is the ASL, may provide for the obligation of the mask even in static situations with respect to distance.
