The Minister of Education admits that on the date of reopening of the schools she does not want to give a date. December 4 is just around the corner and the situation is still uncertain for any kind of pronouncement.
“I don’t feel like giving a reopening date. They are very delicate days. I hope – said Azzolina – in a gradual return to school. Of course, not everyone will go back to class, the date of December 4 is too close to be able to plan everything.
The gradually should refer to the return to the classroom at least in regions where distance education affects only second grade secondary schools, at least in the first classes and fifths interested – the latter – by state exams.
The fear that the restart of the country, including schools, could lead to a third wave of infections requires caution on all fronts. The Christmas period is the one that is being observed with the modification of some schedules for circulation and for the opening of stores. Although caution is required, it is logical to expect increased crowding on the streets due to Christmas shopping, albeit in a different way from other years.
Although schools are safe places, a full reopening could cause transportation-related side effects again. Furthermore, if we were to open ourselves to teaching in the presence again, we would face a stumbling opening. Mario Rusconi from the PNA also did the calculation.
In the newspaper Repubblica he pointed out that the deadline of December 3 is Thursday, so the hypothesis of the next reopening is the weekend, which in turn approaches the holiday of December 8 (Tuesday) and therefore would postpone until December 9 to celebrate schools are open for thirteen days, with 22 being the last day before Christmas break.
“Let’s say – said Rusconi – that going back to high schools from December 9-22 is an idea without logic. On the other hand, it will not be possible to solve the three main critical problems by 2020. Our fear is that we will not be ready even for the days after the Befana. We do not see great works in progress and the ten days that the government will give away for Christmas purchases are a risk that we cannot face ”.
The reasoning leads to the conclusion that the resumption of schools has been postponed directly to January 7, the date on which the unions would have spoken favorably, again with a gradual reopening, if Covid allows. We must not forget that if health regulations were not met during Christmas, the days after Befana could be precisely those in which we run the risk of raising the contagion curve again.
