The rules about refund in January 2021 after the Christmas experiment. Along with 2020, it ended the extra Christmas cashback that the government wanted to incentivize purchases in stores and, at the same time, try to combat tax evasion. But the refund mechanism for purchases made with electronic payments does not stop, starting again in January with different rules. In the “experimental” Christmas phase, from December 8 to 31, ten purchases were enough to get a 10% refund. The refund could reach a maximum of 150 euros. According to Palazzo Chigi sources, on Wednesday, December 30, the amount to be paid to citizens who have already obtained the extra Christmas cashback exceeds 157 million euros.
This is how the cashback changes from January 2021
What has changed since January? After the Christmas experimentation, from the first day of 2021 we go to the “standard” cashback, which always provides a refund equal to 10%. Basically, no procedure will be necessary to activate it: those who have already registered in the IO app or in other ways for the Christmas refund, in fact, are automatically registered in the “standard” procedure. Purchases must always be made in physical stores with cards or payment applications. As for the extra Christmas cashback, online purchases are not valid for reimbursement. On the other hand, payments in bars, restaurants, artisans or professionals and for gasoline are valid.
Refunds with money back in the new year
The maximum refund that can be obtained is 300 euros per year in two installments. A minimum of 50 payments must be made every six months. Every six months you can get a 10% refund on what you spent, for a maximum of 150 euros. As for the extra Christmas cashback, the maximum return per single transaction is 15 euros, regardless of the amount.
The super refund
Along with the “standard” cashback comes super cashback: it is the first 100,000 citizens who carry out the largest number of card and app transactions. In this case, the reimbursement is 1,500 euros per semester, or up to 3,000,000 euros per year (therefore, between the basic cashback and the super cashback it is possible to obtain a return of up to 3,300 euros per year). The super cashback will be active for three semesters, from January 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022. Refunds will be paid to the checking account within sixty days after the end of each period: therefore, in August 2021, February 2022 and August 2022.
