A baby is born premature to a Covid positive mother. Finally the meeting, the first, took place when the little girl was 19 days old. This is also good news, on the eve of the day, November 17, in which the World Prematurity Day is celebrated. The isolation did not allow visits to the parents’ ward, but the neonatal specialists at the Niguarda hospital in Milan did not leave the girl alone. Thanks to the video calls and photos that the neighborhood sends to parents every day. and a “delivery” chain has also been activated to deliver breast milk to the baby. From the photos – today mom and dad say – we didn’t realize how small she was, the meeting after 19 days made us discover this girl who was a little bigger than our hand. Only when we saw her did we realize that we had become parents.

Delizia is 37 and Stefano is 36. They have wanted to be parents for a long time. But the pregnancy got complicated when she was in her seventh month. I was convinced that I still had weeks, months ahead of me before delivery, says the mother. But it didn’t happen that way. We ran to the hospital. Everything went very fast and there was no time to notice anything. In fact, in the delivery room the little girl was immediately assisted by a dedicated team who placed her on the warming bed to take her to neonatal intensive care. We thought that we could see it recently but it did not happen – the father explains – because the swab detected the mother’s positivity to the coronavirus and prevention measures were taken. Mom admits: it’s been a long, endless day. It was really very difficult, in addition to the continuous updates from the department, they also followed me for psychological support. Every 2-3 days a call came from Niguarda’s psychologist, which was essential to calm me down and make me understand that I had become a mother, it was difficult to achieve this in this situation of forced distancing. We all worked hard and then there was milk for our little girl to get to the hospital. I took it home and then we sent the containers to the living room through a friend who acted as a courier. It was an opportunity each time to write messages of encouragement to be delivered directly on the labels of the containers: “together soon”, “I always think of you” were for my little girl but in the end they were an incentive for everyone to continue without giving up. When they told us that their first meal would only be 3 grams of milk, we were amazed, so little! We didn’t realize how small it was!
