Courteous, kind, reserved, they always saw them together, the mother and her two children, now adults, in Figline Valdarno (Florence) where they had moved for the oncological treatment of the 77-year-old woman well brought despite the disease. They died a month and a half ago in a house in an alley in the historic center and nobody has noticed anything. So today a neighbor decided to notify the authorities about the stench coming from the three rooms and they found them.
They hadn’t seen them for a long time and there was no noise. In fact, they were all dead. Luigia Teresa Etteri, 77, died in her bed from the tumor that finally won her over. While child protectors have failed to protect themselves from pain and despair: according to a reconstruction by the carabinieri, Massimo Giovannella Del Bianco, 51, and his sister Francesca, 46, after having helped their mother to the end, were stunned with medicine and then committed suicide with a knife, a single blade, seized. They found them both in bed this morning. The investigations try to assess whether for brother and sister it is a case of homicide-suicide, with the man who kills her and then beats himself to die in turn: but only the autopsy and other findings ordered by the magistrate on duty. Gianni Tei will be able to shed light on this additional aspect, as well as on the complete reconstruction of the story.
Giovannella Del Bianco’s father was away for some time, he too died. He was told by his wife that he was a widow in the Figline shops, in brief and friendly conversations with locals with whom this family had no ties. On the other hand, they said little about themselves; shortly after, being northern Italians who left for Venezuela and then returned home in recent times. Luigia Teresa returned to Italy in 2018, her son was repatriated in 2008.
The 77-year-old woman and her children came to Figline for the woman’s treatment, followed by the nearby ‘Serristori’ hospital, which is not even 100 meters from the alley where the apartment where the bodies were found is located. And also due to its proximity to Florence, easily accessible by train, it seems like a destination for medical exams.
The house of Vicolo Guinelli had been bought, a low-light Castilian farmhouse flanked by old common buildings, perhaps two meters wide, closed by a vault on the street that later opens onto the roof by forty meters long. A locksmith remembers changing the lock on his door less than two years ago. They were the new owners. It is the same door that had a double lock and that the firemen had to break down.
The record in the Figline registry is in 2019, after which a lot of discretion and no word about the disease. The neighborhood also believed that they had left, perhaps that is also why the bodies were discovered weeks later. On the other hand, the Covid lockdowns have not helped social relations even for these newcomers. And the inevitable surrender to the very serious disease, made in November after a hospitalization, and the return to the house from the alley, has ended with all his strength forever.
