“The most serious left for days without treatment”

Mama Sara is angry. The name is fictitious, but the odyssey that her family has lived through for almost ten days is true. With three boys sick of COVID-19 at home and one, the youngest, “who is ill and was not admitted to the hospital: we waited two days for a visit despite the fact that we had warned 118, ASL and District that he had a fever and a cough that prevented him from breathing. It’s a shame”.

The story comes from Bettona Pass (Perugia): Sara has two children who, together with their two girlfriends and other friends, have been on vacation in Sardinia. A group of seven boys who have always been together “and always taking care of the use of masks and all possible precautions”. So scrupulous that from the ferry they warned the families: “We have been in places where they discovered outbreaks, as soon as we return we put ourselves in self-isolation so as not to risk anyone.” The boys, in fact, of Porto Cervo in the afternoon from Ferragosto to Billionaire (They wouldn’t have been infected there anyway, they say, since two other friends with them that day tested negative), they captured all the places where there was an increase in infections.

Covid, the average age of infections is 29 years. The case of Romaña: 91 positives in a disco

Hence the diligent decision to remain isolated. “A choice so responsible that we must recognize them: they could have returned to their life and work and infect anyone,” emphasizes Mama Sara. Because, when they returned on Friday, August 21, everyone closed up at home: the two brothers with one of their girlfriends in the family home and the others in their respective homes. Without knowing anyone: families had been alerted, pantry full and doors closed. They immediately call the toll-free number: the first appointment for the tampon is the following Wednesday. Too late to be afraid and the next day they show up at the ASL in Piazzale Europa, where they do the car checks. The results arrive on Sunday: 4 out of 7 are positive.

Among them is Sara’s youngest son, 23, healthy and without any previous pathology, his symptoms, however, immediately become worrisome: fever, continuous cough, shortness of breath and collapses on the same Sunday. Fortunately, her brother and her girlfriend film her, warn their parents, who are safely residing in a separate apartment, and start asking for help. “We call 118, who tells us to call the medical guard, who tells us to call 118 – explains Sara -. “If we come we will hospitalize him and who knows when they will see him, then in a Covid ward he might get sicker,” they replied. Without words, we called our doctor who activated the Usca (Special Care Continuity Unit, ed) and only on Monday night he came to visit him. She was very nice, but on Thursday, three days later, we had to call her because she was getting worse.

“His lungs are tired,” he said. And finally he gave us the antibiotic. But he was choking on a cough, he couldn’t get up: he was in bed for so long that the sores came out. And in all these days, not even a phone call from ASL to find out how he was doing. They left us alone, not knowing what to do and how to behave. Only the pharmacist really helped us, also explaining to keep blood saturation under control – the only one who told us and was interested in the course of the disease. However, these boys would only have the right to receive compliments for their behavior. «The peak – continues Sara -? When they had to remake the tampons on Friday, the ASL told us to put them all in the car and send them to look for the fourth positive friend: my son always with a high fever and cough. If they had been in an accident, they would not have been able to get out of the car either. The swabs are still positive, but the 23-year-old since yesterday, after antibiotic therapy, at least coughs less. “The healing is, then, a Babylon – closes Sara -. And if my son had continued to get worse, other than refusing to hospitalize me, I would have taken him to the hospital. But with the carabinieri ».
