Since Sunday night he has been alert in Bovolenta, the area of greatest risk in the town of Ponta. The operational centers will remain active for another four days
BOVOLENTA. The wave of floods along Bacchiglione and Frassine has passed, but the alert remains for the new and intense rains expected, and confirmed by the facts, from today morning and partly for Wednesday. The rivers continue to be monitored in a special way and the eyes are on the most critical points in the province. Indeed, there is the fear of “the long wave”, which is a prolonged phase of very high levels, particularly for the Bacchiglione River. Levels fell this afternoon, Tuesday, but could start to rise again overnight. Not surprisingly, the regional civil protection center has invited municipalities at risk to keep active the Coc, the municipal operational centers, at least until next Friday.
Open front for the Bacchiglione
If at night between Sunday and Monday the greatest attention was concentrated, together with the fear of flooding, on the stretch of the river to the west – from Cervarese, Veggiano, Saccolongo and Selvazzano, to Padua – yesterday all day the southern part to keep in suspense. From Ponte San Nicolò, Polverara, Casalserugo, Bovolenta and Pontelongo, the river has only risen, slowly but surely, reaching its maximum only at night. The hydrometric level, which at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday night was 3.92 meters (Bovolenta station), reached 6.43 yesterday at the same time. A slow but no less worrying flood, which evidently kept dozens of civil protection volunteers on alert, the engineers of the Department of Civil Engineering along with the mayors.
Criticisms in the Ponta area
The day before, Civil Protection had already installed the bulkheads in the first barrier in the town of “Ponta”, the small peninsula next to Piazza Matteotti, the first strip of land that ends under water in the event of flooding. Yesterday afternoon the volunteers returned to action to assemble and operate a pump that kept the ground dry next to the first barrier, affected by the formation of fountains.
It was not necessary to evacuate the five people living beyond the walls, but the entire area will continue to be closely monitored. “During the inspection with the civil engineering department in the morning,” explains Mayor Anna Pittarello, “we found a stationary situation. Shortly after noon, technicians confirmed that the water level would rise again by about half a meter and then begin to drop very slowly. At 5 o’clock in the afternoon, the managers of the Civil Engineers informed us that the maneuvers had begun to reduce the flow of the river, thus declaring us out of danger. The situation has always been under control, but there has been concern. Obviously we will continue monitoring in the next few hours, given the weather forecast ».
In recent months, the course of the Bacchiglione south of Padua has been affected by the reinforcement of the embankment at the most critical points. A diaphragm was built on the embankment north of Bovolenta to prevent the evacuation of the entire center. Now it is the turn of the Murazzi: “In January the tender for the 1.4 million project will be launched, which will begin in May and will make it possible to protect the plaza area”, concludes Pittarello.
In the other municipalities
In Casalserugo, Civil Protection monitored the embankments throughout the day and Mayor Matteo Cecchinato opened a Telegram channel to report on the evolution of the flood: “The lack of wind and rain have favored the regular flow of water.” At Saccolongo, the Creola Bridge was closed throughout the day, as well as the Trambacche Bridge in Veggiano.
The Frassine in the Bassa
Even with the risk of another flood in case of bad weather, the situation in Frassine is currently resolved: the maximum level was reached yesterday at 00.10 (3.83 meters) in the Montagnanese in Borgo Frassine and at 4 in Este (3, 35 meters). At 6pm yesterday, the levels had fallen to 2 and 2.68 respectively. In the morning the bridge over the Frassine di Montagnana was also reopened. –
