New spaces open for Covid patients at Lecco hospital
The manager: “If the situation worsens we can convert the entire third floor”
LECCO – If the number of infections continues to increase, the Lecco hospital is preparing to face this second wave: in recent days the beds dedicated to patients with Covid have increased, for a total currently 96 seats.
Six are placed in intensive care and four in sub-intensive care, which can be converted if necessary for the most seriously ill patients, bringing the total number of intensive care posts to ten. Twenty beds are in the infectious diseases room (4 of which are sub-intensive), 18 places in the room called ‘filter’, 16 places in medicine sector 1 and another sixteen in sector 2 that yesterday was converted to house Coronavirus patients along with another subacute care department with sixteen other places.
He is the general manager Paolo Favini to take stock of the reorganization in the Manzoni di Lecco: “After the evolution of the situation in the last ten days, we quickly took measures to further expand the availability of places dedicated to Covid patients – he explained – Strong from experience Over the past few months, we were able to quickly intervene by preparing a rolling block plan that will allow us, as needed, to further expand our availability. If the situation worsens, we will be able to reconvert the entire third floor of the hospital, reaching a total of 200 places for Covid patients ”.
The number of people hospitalized amounts to 63
Currently 63 people are admitted to the Manzoni hospital because they are affected by Covid. About forty are residents of the Lecco area (of which 8 live in the city), another eight are patients from other hospitals outside the province hosted in Manzoni that have been made available to other more saturated structures.
5 out of 6 places are occupied in intensive care, These are patients from Monza, Como and Milan.
“The situation today is different from that of March, we are not in that situation yet and we hope not to get there – underlines the director Favini – the objective of health companies is to offer a response to patients with Covid and at the same time continue to guarantee services related to other pathologies such as heart surgery, cancer surgery. This is in the awareness that we do not have infinite resources in terms of space but also human resources ”.
New hires
The general manager said the hiring of nurses and oss continues. “with the last call we hired 23 which will be of indefinite duration from January, but we have asked everyone to join the service now ”. A need for personnel “difficult to quantify – added Favini – during the first period of Covid we continued to hire nurses and doctors, all of whom we could find.”
The investigation of specialists in infectious diseases and anesthetists is more complex, figures of which, Favini recalled, there is suffering at the national level.
Merate remains ‘Covid free’
At the moment it is not expected that the Merate hospital, the Mandic, will again welcome Covid patients. The general manager of Asst de Lecco made it known. All patients who come to Merate hospital and test positive will be transferred to Lecco.
However, it is not excluded that in the future Merate may also return to the front: “The hospital has a good level pulmonology department – Favini recalled – beyond the choice of our company, it could still be involved in a regional strategy if the pressure on other directors becomes important ”.
Ten lung ventilators donated by Confindustria
Favini thanked the alpine troops who are mounting the tensioned structures these days to keep the users waiting outside the hospital safe and also thanked Lorenzo Riva, president of Confindustria Lecco Sondrio who sent ten lung ventilators to the Manzoni hospital that are already available to patients today.
The virus hasn’t changed
To reiterate once more is the head of Infectious Diseases of the Manzoni hospital, Stefania Piconi: “The virus has not changed, the patients we assist have the same characteristics that were seen in the first part of the pandemic. In 20% of them, these clinical conditions decline rapidly. With regard to therapy, we have learned a lot: certain antivirals used in the first part of the pandemic have not had important results, so there is a different approach to patient care, who is followed and monitored in the evolution of the illness “.
Al Manzoni, said the chief doctor, we are proceeding with the study of two antivirals and we are waiting to also start in Lecco with the experimentation of one of the vaccines that are already being examined by the researchers.
