“Goodbye Paul”, this morning the funeral of the blue champion took place in the Cathedral of Vicenza. Shortly after 10 o’clock, Paolo Rossi’s coffin arrived at the church carried on the shoulders of his son Alessandro and some of his fellow world champions in the summer of 1982: Marco Tardelli, Giancarlo Antognoni, Claudio Gentile and “Spillo” Altobelli. Also present were many other colleagues such as Paolo Maldini, Roberto Baggio, Franco Baresi, Domenico Massaro, Beppe Bergomi, Stefano Tacconi, Bruno Conti, Fulvio Collovati and Giuseppe Dossena who wanted to greet their friend Paolo for the last time. Playing the letter from Antonio Cabrini, former teammate at Juventus and the National Team: “I have not only lost a partner, but a friend and a brother. Together we fight, win and sometimes lose, always standing up even in the face of disappointments. We were part of a group, that group, our group. you’d be leaving so soon but we’d still walk a lot together. I miss you already “.
The arrival of the coffin was greeted with long applause by the many Vincentians present behind the barriers of the square, next to the church, who first sang the choir “Paolo, Paolo ..” and then “Gol de Rossi, goal by Rossi .. “”.
Also present was the president of FIGC Gravina, who paid tribute to the unforgettable blue champion with the team’s number 20 jersey, which Paolo Rossi wore at the 1982 World Cup in Spain.
So much emotion for the former player who took his first steps as a footballer in the Venetian city that he launched him into great football. Rossi had become an honorary citizen last February. Also present was a delegation from Lanerossi Vicenza led by skipper Stefano Rosso.
The coffin will leave Vicenza to reach Perugia where the cremation is planned. Later, the ashes will return to the house where Paolo Rossi had decided to live with his family, in Poggio Cennina in Bucine.
