“The Italian government has closed its eyes on Central mediterranean. As of Friday, our civilian surveillance aircraft Moonbird will no longer be able to take off from Lampedusa ”, thus in a video-message published on Twitter, the spokesperson for the Ong Sea Watch, Giorgia Linardi, denounced the new stop that came from ENAC to the Moonbird helicopter. The aircraft monitors the stretch of sea between Libya and Italy, and since June, thanks also to its help, the organization has managed to detect some 2,600 people in distress. According to Linardi, the accusation would be that of “having denounced too many times and for too long the presence of people who need immediate help in the central Mediterranean”. “We have asked the authorities to intervene whenever we have seen people in danger, as required by law. That is what the authorities question us, ”he concludes.
