The Pian dei Fiacconi refuge damaged by the avalanche
The Pian dei Fiacconi refuge, submerged and destroyed by a large avalanche that broke off the Trentino side of the Marmolada, should have reopened shortly for the winter season. Therefore, the danger for the many mountain skiers who usually reach the structure that stands 2,626 meters above sea level above the ski lift, whose station, which was disused and closed for a year, was in turn destroyed. Fortunately, the heavy snowfall in recent days, and the consequent high risk of avalanches, convinced mountain skiers to avoid high altitude excursions.
The avalanche, with a very wide front of almost 600 meters, from a first reconstruction detached from Punta Penia, located at 3,343 meters, presumably yesterday and was warned by the team of a helicopter that was flying over, always late in the afternoon of yesterday, he sounded the alarm. The Alta Val di Fassa Alpine Rescue immediately dispatched a team to verify that there were no cars in the valley parking lot and thus avoid the possible presence of hikers. Noting that there were no cars and that the police had no reports of missing persons, the team returned and then left in the early hours of this morning to verify the situation at the scene and confirm the absence of those involved. However, the mountain rescue found that the refuge was submerged by snow, with very serious damage.
Manager Guido Trevisan also came to the site for an inspection. “The situation is disastrous, half of the shelter has been destroyed and the other half is going to be demolished. Twenty years of life wasted. “I think the detachment probably didn’t happen yesterday but earlier, but at this point it doesn’t even matter too much,” adds Trevisan. At first it seemed that the Ghiacciaio refuge had also been affected by the avalanche but, as Trevisan himself explains, after an inspection the structure does not appear to have suffered significant damage at this time.
