The ministers Cingolani (Ecological Transition), Franceschini (Culture), Garavaglia (Tourism) and Giovannini (Infrastructure) have given the green light to the plan that provides for the withdrawal of large ships from the historic center of Venice and their temporary landing in Porto Marghera. . The government – the statement published this Thursday reads – has also started “a contest of ideas to remove the landings from the lagoon and solve the problem in a structural and definitive way.”
The passage of large ships in Venice, disputed for some time due to its environmental impact, was initially limited in 2012 by the Clini-Passera decree, which however remained incomplete: the decree prohibited the passage of passenger ships of more than 40 thousand tons through the Giudecca canal .but only in the presence of valid alternatives, which were not prepared. In 2014, the Interministerial Committee again blocked access to vessels of more than 40 thousand tons, but the TAR canceled the provision.
Until last year, the cruise ships, although they weighed no more than 96 thousand tons, continued to pass through the Giudecca canal, sometimes causing accidents, such as that of the ship “Opera”. Meanwhile, the municipality, the region and the cruise lines have jointly drawn up the plan, now also endorsed by the government, for the diversion of traffic at two Porto Marghera terminals through the Petroli canal, away from the historic center.
