The coastguard notified the ban on boarding the ionian sea to the search and rescue team of the Mediterranean NGO Saving Humans, the organization that owns the ship currently anchored in Pozzallo.
To report that they were the same activists in Twitter, who accused the government of wanting to “effectively obstruct and prevent the presence at sea of all civil organizations.” A major indictment brought against the Giallorossi executive, which could definitely undermine the relationship between the Ngo and the Count II.
The Coast Guard measure
The men of the Pozzallo Coast Guard led by the commander of the local Port Authority were notified of the act that prohibited the entry on board the investigation team, Donato Zito. The reason for the measure lies above all in a passage contained in the document of writing: “The profiles of the technicians do not influence the type of service that the Ionian Sea performs”, we read.
In short, the Mare Jonio ship is not registered as a search and rescue ship and therefore cannot board the technicians assigned for that purpose. Like most NGO ships, this ship is also registered as a merchant ship with cargo, monitoring and surveillance functions, hence the Pozzallo Coast Guard decision to deny access to the rescue team. In Fight, the Italian naval register, a class notation has been recognized in the Ionian Sea as “vessel equipped for search and rescue”. But, they said from Pozzallo, the Captaincy did not recognize this specific note and the provision was confirmed.
“The approach of the technicians Fabrizio Gatti me Georgios Iason Apostolopoulos It is unjustified because – says the notified document – the first is a paramedic ship-owner who will provide his activity in support of observation and monitoring at sea, the other is a researcher-observer expert on human rights at sea in the context of the monitoring activities carried out by the Ionian Sea within the framework of the Mediterranez Saving Humans project ”.
The reaction of the Italian NGO
Mediterranea’s response was immediate: “This is the first directed against rescue at sea – said a Republic Luca casarini, first chief of mission of the Ionian Sea – It is imperative that ships are not equipped to do so contrary to all the Solas, Unclos and Hamburg conventions on safety at sea ”. On social media, despite the fact that the decision is not political in nature since it is an act of the Coast Guard, the reactions against the government are furious.
The most used word is “continuityThus accusing the Giallorossi executive of not having implemented any discontinuity of the greenish-yellow government: “This is obviously a directed administrative and judicial persecution that derives from a specific political will of the government – read the statements released by the activists of Mediterranea Saving Humans – and it contains a clear and terrible message and an equally deadly target. The government’s message is: it is forbidden to rescue human lives that are in danger at sea, the government’s objective is to effectively obstruct and prevent the presence at sea of all civil organizations. With the measures adopted from today, missionary activity in the Mediterranean of the Ionian Sea is effectively blocked ”.
The ship returned to navigation on June 9 after being anchored in port during the closure. The last mission ended on September 13, when the Ionian Sea carried 25 migrants to Pozzallo.
