“The call from the emergency room”

A surreal story that has as its protagonist a family distressed by the conditions of their positive relative with Covid and hospitalized, by that communication of the death that never happened that would have started from the emergency room of the Riuniti Polyclinic.

Everything begins on November 6 when Fernando Cristiani, guest of the Palena Foundation (in which 70 infected patients and 28 among health workers were found) tests positive for Coronavirus. For this reason, family members can no longer visit their loved one.

Wednesday night through Thursday uu.ss., at 2.44, the phone rings at the home of the child. He answered his wife, but the other side of the line tinkling sounds recorded and then hung lady.

The next day, Mr. Cristiani’s daughter-in-law reads in the group of relatives of Mrs. Palena’s guests that the father-in-law had died and immediately contacted the director of the retirement home. The doctor confirms that he received the news of the passing away from the emergency room at 2.40 am last night.

After the first moments of discouragement, the Cristiani family takes steps to organize the funeral. Funeral posters are placed in which the death and the transfer of the corpse from the hospital to the cemetery are posted, all scheduled for the following day, Friday, November 20 at 10.30 am.

At 2 p.m. on Thursday, the funeral directors had to go to the ‘Riuniti’ with the coffin that would have received the body of Mr. Cristiani, but a few minutes before the daughter-in-law receives a phone call from the emergency room of the hospital in Foggia communicating to family members that “Mr. Cristiani was not right, he was dead serious.”

Shocked, the daughter-in-law who had answered the phone informed the doctor about the phone call received hours before in which the death of her father-in-law was announced. Instead, the doctor confirms that Mr. Cristiani is seriously ill, but alive and that there were no deaths in the emergency room during the night.

Relatives, incredulous, call the funeral home and block everything. We try to understand who may have made that phone call, but to date it is unclear who the author is.

Fernando’s sons, Francesco, Rita and Luciano have turned to a lawyer to know this story, nothing less than amazing.
