The list goes on minute by minute. Ale 13, there were already ten thousand signatories of the call from the world of culture and entertainment against the closure of theaters and cinemas. A letter addressed to Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and the Minister of Cultural Heritage and Tourism initiated by Cultura Italiae, the association led by Angelo Argento that brings together museum directors, cultural operators, protagonists of the business world, professions, ‘innovation.
An appeal made during the night, first signatories among others Andreé Ruth Shammah from the Franco Parenti Theater in Milan, Ernesto Albanese from Fattore Italia, Alessandro Longobardi from the Brancaccio Theater in Rome, Ilaria Borletti Buitoni, the journalist and writer Luca Poma, Patrizia Asproni from the museum Marino Marini, the playwright Luca Scarlini, the professor and cultural heritage scholar Jane Thompson, the president of the Fondazione Città Italia Alberto Improda.
The letter, entitled “Vissi d’Arte” and addressed on behalf of all sectors and genres of entertainment from the street, film producers, exhibitors, was signed in a few hours by thousands of workers from the world of entertainment (actors, directors, set designers), by writers such as Roberto Alajmo and Santo Piazzese, by the Confindustria culture manager Antonio Calabrò, to name a few. Everything to ask for the opening of theaters and cinemas, considered indispensable bastions of culture and social cohesion, all the more important in this time.
“We are important to civil society – the signatories write to Conte and Franceschini – because we support them in their difficult institutional task of keeping the spirits of citizens high. It is especially in this second wave where we need it most. Theater and cinema cannot stop because they are the invisible reservoir of meaning for the public and individual life of our fellow citizens ”. Places where the influx is regulated and subject to strict rules, places that have reopened their doors laboriously and responsibly after closing.
“Live entertainment workers – read the letter – have made their extraordinary and personal commitment to reopen theaters and cinemas in full compliance with the protocols for the protection of health. They are safe places where the audience sits with a mask and does not speak during the performance. The outlet and inlet are regulated and respect the spacing. These places today represent a virtuous example of the management of public spaces in a pandemic era ”.
And again: “We conscientiously recall our audience, often hesitant and confused by fluctuating and anxious communications, to purchase tickets, reassuring them about the certainty of the shows and the scrupulous adoption of all security measures. Regarding the theaters, we have restarted the production activity of the suspended shows, so we are investing again in their reorganization. We have rescheduled tours and theater premieres, taking enormous risks, investing and therefore betting on the future, despite the prevailing state of uncertainty. We brought back all Cig employees, guaranteeing them not only a fair salary but above all the dignity of their work ”.
Finally, the most heartfelt appeal: “It would be a serious harm for citizens to deprive them of the possibility of dreaming and of being transported beyond the confines of their daily lives.”
