On December 29, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella awarded 36 honors to the Merit of the Italian Republic “to citizens who have distinguished themselves for acts of heroism, for their commitment to solidarity, in volunteering, for their activities in favor of social inclusion , in international cooperation, in the promotion of culture, legality and the right to health. ”Honors to the Merit of the Republic are important recognitions by the State that are assigned at the initiative of the President of the Republic to reward people and initiatives that he considers laudable.
They are not awarded with a fixed frequency and are divided into five categories, from the most prestigious to the lowest: Knight of the Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight. The president, we read on the Quirinale website, “has identified, among the many examples present in civil society and institutions, some significant cases of civil commitment, dedication to the common good and witness to republican values.” Last June Mattarella had awarded another 57 honors to as many people who had distinguished themselves for their commitment during the coronavirus emergency.
