Terrapiattisti leave to demonstrate the end of the world, risk shipwreck and find themselves in Ustica

They wanted to show that the Earth is flat and that the world ends in Lampedusa.

For this reason, two Venetian terrapiattisti have decided to reach the southern island of Sicily in total blockade. A tragicomic adventure with a happy ending: the two risked shipwreck and their journey ended in Ustica.

An article in La Stampa tells the absurd story of this middle-aged couple.

It goes back and three months ago when Italy was completely blocked. The objective of the mission was to set sail from Termini Imerese in the direction of Lampedusa, to show that the flat world ends there. But they completely lost their route and risked shipwreck. A disaster: they wanted to go to Lampedusa, south of Sicily, and they found themselves in Ustica, which is north of Sicily.

They landed on the island tired and thirsty in a small boat, to the general consternation of the mayor, police and coast guard. From here they were escorted to Palermo, where a 15-day quarantine was imposed on them aboard their hull. They attempted a desperate escape by sea, but within three hours they were still close to shore and the Port Authority took them away. In the end, the two returned to Veneto by land when measures to contain infections were relaxed.

“The funny thing is that they orient themselves with a compass, an instrument that works on the basis of terrestrial magnetism, a principle that they, as landowners, must reject,” says Salvatore Zichici, a doctor at the Office of Maritime Health of the Ministry of Health who handled the situation from his garrison in Palermo.
