People join at the entrance of Cableway and then while they’re lining up to go up Cableway. The images taken on Saturday (yesterday) in the ski resort of Verbier, in the canton of Valais, quickly made the rounds of Switzerland: the European country that has chosen to go against the current and maintain ski resorts discover the flaws in your strategy. And the Councilor of State of the Canton, Christophe darbellay, speaks of an “unacceptable situation”. The Swiss model has been indicated by many as proof that it was possible for everyone to ski even during the pandemic of coronavirus. On the first busy weekend, however, at least in Verbier thethe organization did not hold and they saw the same photos of the last march (when the sprouts carriers of the virus throughout Europe) or on October 24 to Cervinia.

Photos of the meetings were shared on Twitter and reported on the local newspaper site Nouvelliste.ch: “Three weeks after Zermatt – we read – it’s up to Verbier to turn social networks around with images of skiers who do not respect health distances”. Switzerland is under pressure, also because ofincreased contagion in some cantons, and already on Friday decided a first reversal, although only partial: as of December 22, in fact, the opening of individual winter centers will be authorized dai cantons only if the epidemiological situation allows it. Furthermore, the scope of closed facilities such as gondolas and cable cars, hitherto unregulated, was reduced to two thirds.

In theory, the cantons themselves are also in charge of controlling the respect for the rules in ski areas (obligation of the mask in transport facilities and spacing in waiting lines) and in case of repeated abuses, they can revoke the authorization. In Verbier, however, this did not happen on Saturday: in theory, the health protocol provided for a mask for everyone in the lines and a distance guaranteed by the horizontal signs. The skiers, however, did not respect the reports and no one intervened: “In fact, the protocol implemented was little respected in some places, so they are ongoing corrective measures“, has explained Eloi Rossier, President of the Municipality of Bagnes, a 20minutes.ch.
However, the real problem was the large influx of people. Also for this reason, in neighboring France, local newspapers emphasize that these images are proof of how it is better to have closed the plants at least in view of the holidays, when many more people would have arrived with tourists. Darbellay himself, advisor to the canon, criticized the situation in Verbier speaking with The Nouvelliste: “At a time when all of Europe is watching us, it is unacceptable that in Verbier the correct queues could not be organized, with barriers, posters on the ground and a rigid reference to the regulations ”. On social media, however, there are also photos dating from days before December 5, in which meetings are seen waiting to go up to the elevators.
To avoid controversy, but today in Verbier the distances were not really … pic.twitter.com/5nlf2dzvhA
