Long lines, with people stuck together, crowded at the entrance of the elevators and in front of the cable car. The images were taken on Saturday at the Verbier ski resort in the canton of Valais and have sparked quite a bit of controversy across Switzerland.
The country, to save the winter season in the Covid era, has decided in the days, unlike others, to keep the ski lifts open, relying on some rules and the responsibility of the skiers. However, based on the images that circulated on social networks, the organization did not function as it should in Verbier. The photos, in fact, recall the scenes of the gatherings of October 24 in Cervinia. “The situation is unacceptable,” said Valais State Councilor Christophe Darbellay.
However, as of December 22, the cantons will authorize the opening of individual winter centers only if the epidemiological situation allows it. In addition, the scope of closed facilities such as gondolas and cable cars, which until now was not regulated, will be reduced to two thirds. Alain Berset, chief federal adviser to the Department of the Interior, explained this at a press conference. The cantons must check the regulations in the ski resorts (obligation to wear a mask in the means of transport and spacing in the waiting lines) and, in case of repeated abuse, withdraw the authorization.
