Suicide, is it alarm? Three cases in a few days in Montebelluna and Pieve di Soligo, the word to the expert

Two cases of suicide occurred in Montebelluna, one in Pieve di Soligo, within a few days of each other. Is this a wake-up call? Does this resurgence, after a truce that occurred during the confinement, tell us that we are facing a social emergency?

We asked one of the leading experts on the subject, Dr. Luigi colusso, psychotherapist, inspirer of the “Rimanere Insieme” group of the Advar de Treviso association (specialized in suicide prevention) that operates in the “Casa dei Gelsi” hospice. Five years ago a provincial table was also created for the prevention of suicidal gestures.

“Too early to argue that there has been an increase in suicides,” begins Dr. Colusso, however, reiterates that during the confinement they have been in decline and that “facing reality” they could grow again. “The feeling is that exactly this is happening,” admits the psychotherapist.

According to Dr. Colusso, analyzing the “emulative effect” caused by the publication in the media, it is not fair and correct not to talk about it at all. The most dangerous aspect of the published news, according to the expert, is related to the too detailed description of the event (how it happened and where) and, above all, the attribution to a specific destabilizing factor: “If I read that this guy committed suicide for financial reasons and I identify with his problems, here I can think that this is the best solution for me too.”Explains Dr. Colusso. It would also be desirable that the centers or contacts to be contacted in case of difficulty were published at the bottom or margin of the article.

Another aspect analyzed by the psychotherapist is how they can be intercepted and how apparently balanced people can be prevented from making such an extreme gesture as taking their own lives. Models to draw on are important, as entrepreneurs explaining how they got out of their difficulties.

Listening is essential and, consequently, allowing the person in difficulty to narrate without barriers: “What we cannot narrate runs the risk of rotting inside”, says Luigi Colusso.

In addition to the Treviso Advar, there are numerous public and private organizations and associations involved in suicide prevention, almost always free of charge, such as: Let’s talk, Listen to us, l’Israa nursing homes in Treviso, the health company, the territorial office of the school, Friend Phone and a regional Plus service phone

The latter perform a telephone reception service that can sometimes be decisive, or they go to one of the local services for direct contact, which obviously takes place, in any case, in order to protect the person and their privacy.
