The earth shakes violently in Sicily, where at 9:27 p.m. an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 was recorded that had as its epicenter the sea off the coast of Ragusano, in Marina di Acate, at a depth of 30 kilometers, but whose energy has spread up to Palermo, crossing almost the entire island.

People went out on the streets in many municipalities in southeastern Sicily, and some of them, out of fear, preferred to spend the night in the car. The strong energy caused great damage to be feared, but the first controls carried out by the Department of Civil Protection did not show damage or injuries. Even firefighters confirm that the data underscores that operating rooms have so far only received information calls and no requests for help.

“So far there has been no damage to people after the earthquake registered tonight in the Ragusa area, but a lot of fear, especially in Vittoria and Acate”, confirmed the president of the Sicilian Region Nello Musumeci, who contacted the prefect of Ragusa Filippina Cocuzza and the regional civil defense manager Salvo Cocina for constant updating.

The first report arrives in the late afternoon to the regional civil protection of Gela, in the province of Caltanissetta, where an 8-story building is damaged. Mayors are conducting inspections and controls in their cities. “There was a lot of fear – says the mayor of Ragusa, Giuseppe Cassì – but there is no damage at the moment, no injuries. I didn’t notice the earthquake because I was in the car. As now that we are touring the city to carry out inspections and controls together with the municipal civil protection, but it seems that there are no damages.

The same data arises from the ongoing inspections in other municipalities in the area, even closer to the hypocenter, such as Vittoria. “We have a talk between mayors – reveals Cassì – and fortunately no one reports damage to things or people”.

“I was so afraid, everything was shaking,” confessed Stefano Sucato, who lives in Comiso (Ragusa), after the earthquake. “Many people have fled and are still on the street,” he confirmed. The earthquake was felt in many municipalities in eastern Sicily, but also in some areas on the western side. “My wife is in Lascari, in the Palermo area, and she has also warned her,” says Sucato. In some houses in Vittoria (Ragusa), the violence of the earthquake caused furniture to fall inside the houses. But there are also reports from Agrigento, Syracuse and Catania. In the capital of Etna, the people of Catania had linked the earthquake to ongoing eruptive activity on Etna. But this time the highest active volcano in Europe is innocent.
