Spain and the United Kingdom have reached an agreement on Gibraltar before Brexit

Spain and the United Kingdom have reached an agreement on Gibraltar before the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union, which will be completed on January 1, 2021. The Spanish government has announced that the small British enclave will leave the European Union but paradoxically it will always be more linked to Spain: Gibraltar will in fact be included in the Schengen area, so in the future there will be no more border controls with Spain.

An even more closed border than the current one, which seemed a real possibility given the imminent departure of the United Kingdom, was feared by the majority of the inhabitants of the enclave, who in 2016 voted by a very large majority to remain in the European Union – l la option obtained 95.9 percent of the votes, and they have many commercial ties with the Spanish territory.

It is not yet clear when the agreement will enter into force: it will probably be included in the final text of the trade agreement between the United Kingdom and the European Union that will be debated by the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament in early January (until then a provisional version of the text will be in force).
