The first number of morning, the new newspaper published by Carlo De Benedetti and directed by Stefano Feltri (or “del” morning? The newspaper’s editorial board seems to favor the latter.) The first issue is made up of twenty pages, of which five and a half are advertising: a significant proportion, which will be difficult to maintain over time, but it shows the will of advertisers to exploit curiosity about the first issue of the newspaper. Six pages are dedicated to Italian politics and news, one to short news, one to letters, the rest to “Analysis” and “Ideas”, detailed articles on politics, society, culture and foreign affairs. morning it costs one euro, significantly less than other newspapers.

morning was born from the initiative – and with the money – of Carlo De Benedetti, 85, for a long time a very important Italian manager and first editor of Republic. In 2019, De Benedetti had tried to buy back part of the shares of Republic, after having publicly criticized the options and style of the newspaper; his children, who said they were “bitter” and “bewildered”, rejected the offer, calling it unacceptable. De Benedetti then decided to found a new newspaper. De Benedetti said that the actions and management of the newspaper in the future will be entrusted to a foundation.

In the editorial on the cover, director Stefano Feltri, 36, writes that morning “He has the ambition to build with his readers a different destiny from that produced by the sum of past elections and mistakes,” he criticizes “twenty-five years of populist politics” and says that “morning will defend the reasons of liberal democracy “and” our priority will be inequalities “, of which the most profound” concerns the environment. “

To be credible, a newspaper must be independent. Tomorrow was born from the initiative of Carlo De Benedetti, far from any entrepreneurial activity, which was financed by the publishing house. After the start-up phase, the actions will go to a foundation that will guarantee resources and autonomy. The sole objective of the company (and the foundation) is to make this newspaper. However, this is not a philanthropic project: newspapers exist if they have readers who buy them from newsstands and subscribe online. We will also have publicity, but we have chosen to rely on readers being free to ask questions and take positions, without conditions.
Tomorrow starts today.
