The road to Foppolo is closed.
Since Monday, December 7, the work of the Bergamo Fire Brigade has continued in Foppolo: here two teams are working to solve the serious traffic problem caused by the snow that has fallen in the last hours. The road is closed due to the danger of avalanches.
Firefighters are in action with a cutter and shovel to clear the path blocked by almost two meters of snow. The road system was completely interrupted and the intervention made it possible, also thanks to the Foppolo City Council’s snow plows, to clear the roads and restore traffic. In the morning, however, the road system is suspended due to the risk of avalanches and therefore it is not possible to reach Foppolo.
Monday’s rain was incessant for most of the day. «Our four shovels – says the mayor of Foppolo Gloria Carletti – unfortunately alone could not guarantee that the road was safe and accessible in the event of the passage of emergency vehicles. So I asked the prefecture for help, which sent the fire cutter in the late afternoon. The snow is really a lot.
From Monday, of course, to get to Foppolo by car you need to ride chains or have a 4×4. On the side of the provincial highway, the municipal roads and in the squares the accumulation of snow is enormous. Cars parked for several days are now literally submerged and nothing is visible in the cabin.
The danger of avalanches, meanwhile, remains high (level 3 from one to five) at the Orobie. On Monday, the Province, with the support of the snow technician Federico Rota, monitored the situation on the provincial highway that goes up from Valleve to Foppolo. The accumulation of snow these days has been important. To increase the danger of avalanches, the rain fell for a few hours even at relatively high altitudes, around 1,400 meters. «The critical moment – Rota still said on Monday night – was above all the one linked to the rain. Now passed. In any case, the avalanche sites are protected by the tunnels, so for now we have decided to keep the provincial road open. On Tuesday, December 8, at 10.30 am, the road was closed due to the risk of avalanches and numerous fallen trees, weighted down by the snow. Other trees are at risk of falling.
On the other hand, the Carona road remains open, very difficult: it can only be climbed with chains or 4×4 cars: it continues to snow.
