In total, 23 people involved in the operation, coordinated by the Public Ministry of Locri: 14 were taken into custody in prison, six ended up under house arrest, and three were forbidden to stay. The alleged crime is a criminal association intended to organize crimes against property, such as extortion, receipt of stolen goods, laundering, theft and fraud, as well as against public faith, the environment and drugs, aggravated by the availability of weapons. . The investigations by the carabinieri made it possible to delineate the internal structure of the clique that may have had joint interests and contacts with the local ‘Ndrangheta gangs. The investigation revealed numerous home burglaries and incidents of receiving stolen goods and trafficking in drugs such as heroin and cocaine. Thefts and scams were consumed in the municipalities of Ardore, Bovalino, Bianco, Brancaleone, Caulonia, Locri, Marina di Gioiosa Jonica, Roccella Jonica, San Luca, Sant’Ilario dello Jonio and Siderno. The operational base of the criminal organization was in the popular complexes of Bovalino where heroin and cocaine were also hidden. The main suspect is a 36-year-old man who coordinated the illegal activities of the group flanked by his 54-year-old uncle. Both were relatives of Nicola Berlingeri, the head of the “gypsy gang”, murdered in April 2012. The investigation also revealed that among the victims of the crimes, contacted by the detainees on online classifieds sites, there were even the parents forced to sell their assets to treat their children with serious illnesses. Goods that the suspects then resell on the black market or on the Internet. The criminal group also had numerous weapons, some of which were seized last May from Domenico Marrapodi, a relative of one of the detainees.
