Then there are four people evacuated due to the inaccessibility of their homes. The passage of the whirlwind is explained by the fire brigade, affected via Vittorio Veneto; via Carducci; via Oberdan Chiesa; via Agostini. Damage to the roofs of buildings, falling trees and the collapse of the tennis traction structure were reported. The tornado caused serious damage to the rowing club, affecting the restaurant where there were customers for dinner, a gym on the coast and some houses, literally uncovered. Numerous ambulances intervened at the scene.
Fallen trees in Fiumicino
Fallen or unsafe trees and poles and night of interventions throughout the territory of Fiumicino due mainly to the strong wind, which also touched 90 kilometers per hour on the Roman coast. The gaze also focused on the strong storm in progress. “It was above all the wind that created problems in the city between yesterday afternoon and last night, compromising our patrols and Civil Protection until 3 in the morning,” says the commander of the Fiumicino Local Police, Lucía Franchini. “Despite the orange meteorological alert for rain, there were no particular floods – explains the commander – while we had to intervene on several roads due to fallen trees and unsafe posts”.
The most important interventions were in via Salvatore Cammisa, in Isola Sacra, where a 10 meter high telecommunications pole swayed dangerously threatening the surrounding houses. To make it safe, a team of telecommunications technicians was required. Various branches and trees have fallen throughout the area. In via delle Tamerici, in Maccarese, a tree fell on a car without, fortunately, causing damage to the driver. Also in via Formoso three trees were felled by the strong wind, while via Moschini had to be closed due to unsafe poplars, one of which fell more than 10 meters. Another tree fell in the Focene area. “From the early hours of the morning the situation seems calmer, but our patrols continue to monitor to intervene immediately in case of criticality – concludes the commander -. I thank Civil Protection whose support was invaluable in managing the situation.
The interventions of the Fire Brigade related to bad weather continue. Tonight, around 2.30, a tall tree fell in the Trastevere district on Via Dandolo 72. There is no participation of people. In addition to the competent 7A team, the Autoscala 1A and the AG10 mobile crane stepped in to remove the imposing size of the plant. Traffic temporarily closed to traffic.
Ischia and Procida isolated
Due to the strong wind that reached peaks of 45 knots throughout the night in the Gulf of Naples, Ischia and Procida are currently almost isolated, with boats and hydrofoils moored in ports. Shortly after 9 a.m. from Ischia, the first ship of the day left for Pozzuoli, but shipping companies are currently not confirming any more departure or arrival connections. Therefore, the supply vehicles are also stopped on the mainland and the uncertainty for the many tourists who had planned the restart of the green island for today.
Snow in Cortina and in the Apennines
A taste of winter in the Veneto mountains, with the snow that made its appearance in Cortina last night and more consistently in the passes of the Dolomites. A few centimeters thick in the steps, like Falzarego’s, and a subzero thermometer. The peaks of the Ampezzo valley appear all white, as a result of the cold eruption that accompanied yesterday’s bad weather in Veneto. Even in the cities of the plains, the temperature change was abrupt: the minimum fell close to 10 degrees, making it the first cold episode of the new season. Real cold instead in the mountains: Cortina registered 2 degrees, values of 4-5 degrees below zero in altitude. No snow, but heavy hail on the Asiago plateau. The ranchers – Coldirett explains – were not left to be disconcerted by the fall, and in the mountainous areas where the snow arrived today they had already foreseen the transhumance of the cattle in time, releasing the cabins and returning to the farms.
The wind was enemy number one in the province of Parma in the last meteorological alert reported by Civil Protection. The precipitations were not violent in nature, although the first snowfalls fell overnight on the Apennine passes: about two inches above 900 meters. Throughout the province, however, the Fire Department and municipal administration technicians had to intervene for dozens of broken branches but also for several trees that fell to the ground. The most serious episode in the park of the Citadel of Parma where a large plant fell in a meadow without hitting people or things luckily.
Whirlwind also in the Gioia Tauro area
Late yesterday night, a whirlwind hit with very strong winds. Inside the port, a particularly strong gust of wind caused a whole row of empty containers to be folded and thrown. Due to the adverse weather conditions, in addition to the wind also a real storm, the airport’s activity was temporarily suspended and then resumed with the morning shift. No personal injuries were reported. Verifications and controls are currently being carried out throughout the port area. Damages and inconveniences also on the roads due to the presence of uprooted trees and uprooted billboards. Rains and strong winds, at night and in the morning in the rest of the region where temperatures have dropped several degrees. Marine storms are registered in the Tyrrhenian belt of the region. Numerous interventions by the fire department.
