Schools closed in Reggio Calabria from Monday, this is the decision after the meeting of the municipal working group on the Covid emergency. «With great regret – announces the mayor Giuseppe Falcomatà – We share with all the experts the need to close schools as of Monday. In the next few hours I will sign an ordinance. At the same time, the mayor reiterated the need for the ASP to follow up the cases, “without which any action runs the risk of being ineffective.”

Therefore, the school is closed for now, but a safe restart is already in the works for the end of November.. This is assured by the mayor and the councilor of the school, Rosanna Scopelliti. “We made this decision with regret – say the two representatives of the Reggio administration -, aware of the damage that school deprivation causes to children and young people, particularly the most fragile, and how in territories like ours the school also represents a protection of legality and an opportunity for redemption from a generalized condition of cultural deprivation and educational poverty. We closed because the ASP has made it known that it cannot continue with the tracking and execution of the swabs, which continually arrive in particular from schools, since in that area the children and staff are constantly monitored and empowered ”.

For the mayor and councilor, «the paradox is therefore that we are forced to close precisely because the protocol for identifying possible infections in schools works too well and is loaded with work beyond the forces that the ASP has put into March. Therefore, we are not closing due to the responsibility of the school personnel, who in these weeks of reopening have distinguished themselves by their dedication and professionalism to continue guaranteeing the right to education of the children and young people of our community. We thank you for what you have done and will do.

Falcomatà and Scopelliti add “we immediately put ourselves at the service of the schools, to support them, when necessary, in a coordinated use of funds for distance education and, if possible, to identify others among the regrettably scarce municipal resources. But we will not limit ourselves to this: we have already started a dialogue with the competent authorities, starting with the ASP, to remove the causes that led to the closing of the schools; so that when they reopen, the health system is prepared to adequately support the school safety protocol, guaranteeing, for example, preferential lanes for students and teachers, as well as a constant flow of information to arrange quarantines if necessary ”. Finally, “we close today but we are already working on reopening safely at the end of November.”
