School, “non-existent distances”. Half hypothesis lessons from home

School,

The push up of the contagion, coinciding with more than two weeks since the reopening of schools, represents an alarm bell. What will we do if the trend does not stop and the increase in new positive cases becomes constant and therefore we will overcome the wall of 3,000-4,000 infected per day? The priority, as the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, repeated yesterday, is the school, which is first of all, obviously also football.

But in the tables of some regions, in particular Lazio, a plan B is already in circulation: for secondary schools, if necessary, it is possible to resort to school shifts, 50 percent of students present, 50 at a distance. This solution should apply only to secondary schools for two reasons: the first is that children, with a very marked sociability, are the ones who involuntarily risk most of fueling transmission; the second: those over 14 years old can stay home alone without a relative, on the contrary, forcing some of the younger children to study at home would put parents who have to go to work in great difficulties. «To date – observes the Minister of Health of Lazio, Alessio D’Amato – for us, infections in schools are not yet the main source of problems, the epidemic is mainly fueled by events, ceremonies, parties with friends, family gatherings. But we must prepare for alternative solutions if, as in other countries, the contagion curve increases even further.

Today the Scientific Technical Committee will meet with the Minister of Education, Lucía Azzolina, and together they will take stock of the situation. According to experts, it still takes three weeks to understand the effect of reopening schools on infections. This scenario feeds the concerns of Campania, even yesterday the Italian region with more positive aspects: here the lessons began a week later, there could soon be a new push on the front of the school effect infections. Even in the CTS the hypothesis of “changes” in secondary schools is not ruled out, but all decisions will be made when it becomes clear – as mentioned in two or three weeks – the role of the reopening of schools in the increase of infections . But everyone agrees: staggering attendance at secondary schools would partially solve the problem of public transportation overcrowding, because it would cut in half the number of students between 14 and 18 who have to arrive at your school every day.

In fact, already today some of the students are teaching remotely, from home thanks to the PC or tablet. According to Mario Rusconi, president of the Lazio Presidents’ Association, the percentage is significant: “It ranges between 10 and 20 percent, depending on the region. There are two reasons: in some institutes there are not enough spaces, so it was decided to use the lessons, for some of the children, electronically; and where positive or suspicious cases were found, distance lessons were chosen ”. If in primary school most of the positive aspects are found among teachers, in secondary school the reported cases are mainly among students. However, delays and problems in remote lessons are reported everywhere. If it was understandable in March, couldn’t it have been organized in time for the new school year? Rusconi: «Something has been done, resources have arrived to equip students who did not have them with tablets and” soaps “, modems with internet connection. Schools have organized courses to train teachers. But we must be honest: the average age of our teachers is high and this is worth it, even if it must be said with equal honesty that sometimes there are teachers in their sixties who are more comfortable with technology than colleagues in their thirty . Then we pay for the country’s delay in digitization.
