School, Covid was needed!

Forgive the provocative but sincere title. Never seen a lot of innovation in Italian school as in recent months. the coronavirus gave a kick in the ass to refractory to technology, to those who love long meetings in the presence, to municipal administrators convinced that the school canteen it was a service well done, to the managers chained to their couches and to many others.

In a couple of weeks we will go back to school, with great difficulty, but with numerous innovations that until recently we would never have imagined. At last parent interviews it will be done online!

In 2017 its Modern woman I had launched the proposal to meet parents thanks to the Internet. Already then I wrote: “In all other places, from the company to politics, from the courts to the media, online is used to hold important meetings . Not at school: in the area of ​​bureaucracy, homework, the note in the newspaper, the blackboard next to the multimedia, meeting with parents is mandatory but all. If we were to introduce online interviews, teachers and parents could “meet” much more than what happens now, they would have the opportunity to exchange opinions, advice on children whenever they want, without being subjected to a ‘ritual’ or having to ask the opportunity to meet the teacher. “
Someone has accused me of being a fool. Oh dear for touching the tradition of the classroom interview. Now we will without much trouble. In 2020, what we could have done well before will come true: better late than never!

Always be on the subject of the Net and its use for school. Goodbye to the figure of the companion who takes home homework to the sick one. And I say it without nostalgia. Now whoever gets sick will have the right to follow her (hopefully if she can) home lessons connecting directly with the classroom. Of course, it will be necessary to have schools with a good Internet connection, which is sometimes rare in our country.

Another futuristic “discovery”: This year’s teaching colleges can be done online. Many schools, the September 1st, they organized the meeting of their “parliament” online. And also in this case, goodbye to the swarm of hundreds of teachers huddled in muggy classrooms without air conditioning. Goodbye to the intense chat That was the poor manager’s soundtrack. Say goodbye to meetings with croaking microphones and dead batteries. Finally each teacher and professor will connect from wherever the hell they want, they will not talk to the neighbor, they will speak in an orderly manner. IT IS who is not interested (worse for him) will not bother the rest of the world, but you can shower, do housework, or chat with a friend without disturbing others.

Covid was slow to understand that the canteen is ready in his class it is more functional and less chaotic. In many institutions, children eat in their classrooms under the supervision of a teacher. It is clear that in each classroom there will be at most ten, maybe fifteen children: a quiet lunch. Goodbye to the loud screams and howls of school lunches with plates of boiling soup that are overturned by the just vivacity of the children. Goodbye to anti-noise panels built by city councils to try to soundproof the rooms: the effectiveness of these panels has never been seen.

They sure will more teachers, more janitors but this is another story to which the ministry should have taken refuge (the conditional is essential).

For decades, journalists have been writing about the lack of toilet paper, soap, sanitizer gel at school. The “abc” of good education in health and hygiene until a few months ago, not in summer. Now it seems that there will no longer be a bathroom, no classroom without gel or soap. Goodbye to the teachers who buy tissues for children, who come to school with toilet paper brought from home. Goodbye to the teachers cleaning their chairs.

And it took the coronavirus to change ours school furniture. Who could have imagined until last January that the old benches with chewing gum from tens of generations, nailed under the table, would disappear to make room (albeit late) for new stations. The idea of a new session (net of controversy) was a dream: We would never, ever have thought of not seeing the uncomfortable wooden chairs that hundreds of guys have put their asses on.

What is needed now is not to go back to the frontal lesson, but to continue innovate teaching. But this is also another story that I hope the ministry has thought about.

Here, unfortunately, Covid-19 was needed to change the Italian school!
