“I’m not a racist, anyone who knows me knows that. At least I hope so.” Today’s brief statements were not enough to “save” the reputation of Sebastian Colţescu, at the center of a real scandal after the serious episode of racism that saw him protagonist last night at the Parc des Princes. But who is the PSG-Istanbul Basaksehir fourth official who is so talked about?
The Romanian referee born in Craiova in 1977, at the age of 43, Colţescu has 364 matches, 273 of which in the Romanian top flight. Nor does he lack international experience, given that in Europe his matches are 9 between Champions and Europa League, without forgetting the 7 matches refereed between Nationals. An experienced referee, therefore, and also endowed with great personality, given the almost 2,000 (1918, to be precise) yellow cards that he issued throughout his long career.
In his story, more human than professional, there is finally a sad and difficult episode in October 2008, when Colţescu tried to commit suicide. And to think that his “new life” had begun (also) thanks to the turning point that came in the refereeing field, with the direct transition from the third to the first soccer series in his country.
