“Safe School” is the experimental project, one of the first in Italy, developed by the Piedmont region to guarantee the safe return to classes after the Christmas holidays.

An initiative that according to President Alberto Cirio “has solid scientific foundations, because it has been developed by our epidemiologists and experts with a green light also from the medical world.”

As explained by the Councilor for Education, Elena Chiorino, during a press videoconference “this is a project that involves an investment of 7 million euros and which once again testifies to the attention that the Region has devoted and continues to dedicate to the school . The objective is to retake the lessons in person as safely as possible and to continue them until the end of the school year, thus guaranteeing students the best possible right to study in the current situation ”.

The project, according to a note from the Region, will be structured as follows:

  • from January 4 to March 31, 2021, performing a screening by voluntarily executing an antigenic or molecular test every 15 days to the 83,000 members of the teaching and non-teaching staff of the educational services for children and preschools, primary schools, first and second level secondary schools, training agencies of the Vocational Education and Training system, with prior reservation from your GP (for non-residents of Piedmont there is a preferential path through the Sisp);
  • from January 11 to March 31, 2021, carrying out, with the support of the Covid representative of each school, a modular projection to the 75,000 second and third grade students, who will be voluntarily submitted once a month (every week they test a quarter of each class) to molecular and antigenic swabs using the hotspots present throughout Piedmont.

“In this way – said Chiorino – we can monitor the progress of the infection and contain it. We ask parents to accompany their children to the hotspot once a month. We expect a participation of 70% of the interested parties ”.

Pietro Presti, Covid regional strategic consultant and coordinator of the epidemiologists working group that developed the monitoring project aimed in particular at the second and third middle schools, wanted to point out that “it is a plan that is based on collaboration between all key actors for the resumption of school activity. We will use rapid, molecular swabs because the goal is to quickly identify any positivity, “while epidemiologist Giuseppe Costa argued that” continuous testing for students in the lower middle classes serves to facilitate timely follow-up of cases at a variety of ages that, together With high school, she was more exposed to the contagion pathways of school and extracurricular life, and that, more than high school, she is vulnerable to the impoverishment of learning opportunities linked to distance learning. Therefore, these classes are the recipients that can benefit the most from this health prevention program ”.

Fabrizio Manca, director of the regional office of the school, intervened in the video connection, who highlighted how “with this articulated and complex project, President Cirio’s promise to retake lessons in presence for the second and third middle schools is maintained, and guarantees fullness. ” the exercise of the right to study and the safety of school personnel “, Guido Giustetto, president of the Turin Medical Association, who also on behalf of the other presidents of the Piedmont Provincial Orders declared that” returning to face-to-face teaching is very important and the project of the Region gives the guarantee of not wasting energy allowing us to achieve the objectives, also thanks to the collaboration of all the medical colleagues ”, and Roberto Venesia (Fimmg), Antonio Barillà (Smi) and Mauro Grosso Ciponte (Snami), Representatives of trade union organizations of family doctors added that “allowing schools to reopen as soon as possible is all the more necessary for a civilized country. Doing it with maximum safety is a duty, and family doctors will also contribute their professional contribution on this occasion ”.

Yesterday we anticipated the content of the project with a note from Marco Giordano, Anief Piemonte.
