The restarts, finalized by Ronaldo, have decided Juve-Udinese. However, dribbling was problematic
The difficulties of Juve
Despite the victory in the round, not everything went well at Juve-Udinese. Even in the most negative races, the team of Pirlo he had always managed to create clear scoring chances. This did not happen in the first half against Udinese, especially when the Friulians were on defense. The home team’s dribbling was slow and sterile, unable to spoil Gotti’s 5-3-2.
In Parma, we had seen exceptional positional fluidity, with players constantly turning and swapping positions. Juve on Sunday night was quite static and stiff, the opponents covered the spaces without too much worry.
The absence of a first tip like Morata he accentuated these difficulties in positional attack. In Juve matches, it is common to see verticalization from behind Bonucci for Morata, who controls his back to the goal and allows the team to go back up. Without the Spanish, they were Ramsey me McKennie (especially the first one) who often threw himself to attack the spaces freed by Dybala, but dribbling was almost always unproductive.
We saw laziness and lack of ideas, with predictable setbacks that ended in a vacuum.
In the slide above, you can see Juve standing with the players away from each other. Danilo tries an unlikely pitch for the very lonely McKennie (who fills the center of the attack with Ronaldo), surrounded by rival jerseys. The ball ends up in a vacuum.
A sterile drip
With Udinese short and narrow, the ball should have been turned quickly to create space. Taking into account that Juve always plays with two wide and open exteriors (yesterday they were church me Alex Sandro), more ways needed to be found to isolate them on the weak side. This did not happen: In addition to the slowness of possession, Juve was often bottled up in the center with internal phrasing that generated little or nothing (Dybala was really inaccurate). Udinese managed to untangle these situations easily.
Two situations in which Juve loses the ball centrally. Note, on the second slide, how the team collapsed in the center, in the funnel erected by Gotti. Udinese always got along well in these situations.
Sometimes, when there was no central space, the Bianconeri tried to widen the game (especially on the left). The maneuver, however, sI ran aground in the band often and willinglyme: the players were fermi, with Udinese – compact – who slid well into the ball zone. Alex Sandro was thus forced to retreat, we saw this horizontal possession during prolonged phases of the first half that he could not find the free man behind the rival lines. Ideas and depth were lacking, the latter well covered by Udinese.
In the slide above, you can see one of the many situations where the maneuver got stuck on the left. Sandro, without reference to the writing (and surrounded by Friulian shirts), he is forced to take another pass backwards.
Reboots change the race
In a match where it was impossible to find spaces, the merit is to have taken advantage of the difficulties of Udinese in the disconnection in the best possible way. The first 3 goals came via transitions, where the hosts they managed well to get the ball back forward (De Paul very reviewable in those situations).
After regaining control of possession, Juve was good at verticalizing and immediately attacking spaces. Ronaldo was always on time to attack deep, just as Ramsey and Bentancur were good at cutting short to a less polished De Paul just in handling possession. From their recoveries came the first and third goals respectively, among other things in very high areas of the field.
The short restarts leading to the first and third goals.
In the most difficult moment, in which the Bianconeri found no way out, the Juve managed to create the episodes that put the game downhill. Udinese fell apart a lot in the second half, with the hosts who, especially at the restart, created chances much more easily (2.82 goals expected in the second half, against just 0.72 in the second half). So much so that Gotti said that he was very disappointed with the way the Friulians coped and reacted to negative episodes.
Despite the victory, not everything went well for Juve, who also revealed the usual defensive difficulties. Now that the season is already played in the next direct confrontations, Pirlo must wait for the team to improve its performance.
