And what does he want from her? The woman responds, seeks explanations, discovers that they have had sexual relations. A relationship that he remembers absolutely nothing about and that he never wanted. That man is the taxi driver who the night before had been sent from the operating room in front of a club in the Monti neighborhood, in the historic center of the capital, where he had spent the evening with friends and where he had drunk a lot. She is angry. She sees a slight bruise on one leg.

She wonders, her head explodes: how is this possible? After a few days she strengthens and runs to the Monte Mario carabinieri station to report everything. “A taxi driver raped me,” he records. The man, a 46-year-old Roman, in possession of a regular license, member of a cooperative, has been under house arrest since yesterday. And he is also accused of a second episode of sexual violence. In fact, the military investigating the case of the 34-year-old go back to an old file that had never been closed (the witness had meanwhile left Italy and at that time certain findings were not found) by the prosecutors of the anti-violence group of the Public Ministry of Rome and on the complaint presented to the police in April 2017 by a 20-year-old American tourist. The taxi driver, instead of taking her back to the hotel after a night of nightlife in Campo Marzio, stopped the taxi in an isolated location, sat in the back and began to grope her. But the young woman, on that occasion, reacted and managed to escape.

This time, however, the victim could not refuse the advances. As reconstructed by the carabinieri, the 46-year-old man allegedly abused her while she was completely unconscious from excessive alcohol consumption. Probably, with the excuse of supporting her and accompanying her to the front door, he managed to go up with her and enter her apartment, where the relationship was consummated. The woman does not remember anything: “I don’t even know how I managed to get home, I have a total faint,” she desperately told Major Nicola Quartarone’s soldiers and prosecutor Maria Monteleone. What she knows and can only imagine how in a waking nightmare she learns from the exchange of text messages with the taxi driver herself who, thus, indirectly carries out a kind of confession. She asks him for clarification, he explains what happened. He would even like to see her again. But he doesn’t even remember giving her his phone number.
THE INVESTIGATIONS
The complaint is followed by technical comments from the military forces. Both phones, the taxi driver’s and the 34-year-old’s, are connected in the same places and at the same time that January night. And then there is that other episode, the previous one that nails it in front of the investigators’ eyes. So the investigating judge has no doubts when issuing the precautionary measure under house arrest. The fear is that the 46-year-old man has been the protagonist of another attempted violence or wasted. In the case, investigators are confident that other potential victims will find the courage to report. Among the suspicious episodes also the suicide of a 17-year-old Australian that took place in February 2019 in the San Giovanni district. The girl told a friend that she was raped by a taxi driver last month. Yesterday, Mayor Virginia Raggi announced in a tweet that she had “asked to start the process to revoke the license of the taxi driver arrested for sexual assault against two clients. These are very serious episodes that, if confirmed, offend the entire city and should be severely punished. Rome – he stressed – is close to battered women ».
