Roma, what a mess with Diawara: they risk 0-3 at the table with Verona

In the Verona-Roma field they finished 0-0, but for the homologation of the result we will have to wait for the sentence of the sports judge. The departure of the Giallorossi, in short, was not the best and not only because of the crushing of the forwards (the passing of the baton between Dzeko and Milik now at high risk), but also because of the supposed regulatory mess in which he finds himself Dan Friedkin’s club. In Verona, in fact, by regulation Amadou Diawara could not have taken the field, since in the official list of 25 players delivered by Roma (like all other clubs) at the beginning of the season he was included in the sub 22 and not among the “over”.

At the beginning of each season, in fact, each team must deliver a roster of 25 players, to which they can add as many players under the age of 22 that they want (threshold that was raised by one year in 2018). And last season Diawara was, in fact, in this sort of B list, that of the under 22s, which allowed Roma to release an extra box for another player older than the Guinean midfielder. In the meantime, however, Diawara turned 23 on July 17 and should have moved up the top list, according to the regulations. Which, however, was not done at the beginning of this season, with Diawara remaining like this on the under-22 list. And with that status he played in Verona, starting in Giallorossi’s midfield alongside Frenchman Veretout. Roma, of course, are waiting now to understand what will happen, because the regulations foresee a 3-0 defeat (exactly as happened in 2016 to Sassuolo, who was assigned a lost match for having Antonino Ragusa play without having included in the famous list of 25). If the sports judge expresses himself in this regard, however, in Trigoria they are ready to appeal. This is because the error actually occurred, but it is an error that was made in good faith and not with the intention of committing fraud or willful misconduct. In fact, on the list of 25 places, Rome still has 4 free spaces and it could easily have included Diawara in one of these. It was an oversight, in short, an oversight. The defensive thesis will be basically this, with Rome that will rely on absolute good faith. But it’s an oversight, however, that it could cost the Giallorossi the point they won Saturday night at the Bentegodi.

Last season Diawara, among other things, with Roma has already played 5 games after having turned 23. Due to Covid-19, in fact, the 2018/19 calendar was extended beyond its natural expiration, with the Guinean who -so- after his birthday took to the field in the League against Inter, Spal, Fiorentina and Turin, in addition of the match against Sevilla, in the round of 16 of the Europa League. However, by regulation, the status acquired at the beginning of the season is valid. So even though he was already 23 years old, Diawara was regularly in force as under 22 even in the final part of the season. Now, however, not anymore. And Roma runs the risk of immediately finding themselves at zero in the standings.
