It was in July of last year when Brigade Deputy Mario Cerciello Rega was killed with 11 stab wounds in the heart of the capital. These are precisely the moments that could have happened to the carabiniere who shot and killed Jalal Badawi with a service pistol on Sunday night, hit by a shot fired by a soldier after seeing his colleague being hit in front of his eyes in the chest with a large screwdriver.
A shot to the right flank exploded to cover the fellow carabiniere hit with a screwdriver in the chest. Thus died Jalal Badawi, the thief caught by the carabinieri while attempting a robbery in a EUR building in Rome. Fifty-six years old, Syrian, with diverse criminal records, the victim was burdened by an expulsion decree, something that could have prompted him to do everything possible to avoid arrest.
The thief died on the spot, the wounded carabiniere, a 31-year-old young man from the Nucleo Radiomóvil in Rome, was transported by ambulance 118 to Sant’Eugenio hospital, after being hit with a long screwdriver on the right chest. Medicated, the soldier was discharged with a 7-day prognosis.
The events took place on the night from Saturday to Sunday in a building in via Paolo Di Dono, between the areas of Vigna Murata and Roma 70, in the area of Ardeatino. To alert doorman 112 of a building adjacent to the place where the tragedy occurred. After hearing suspicious noises on the first floor of the neighboring building, the carabinieri from the Nucleo Radiomóvil de Roma intervened immediately.
Upon entering the building’s garden, one of Arma’s soldiers found himself in front of the thief who, armed with a screwdriver, struck him in the chest. Then he shoots him with the service pistol of the attacked carabiniere’s partner. Two shots with the second hitting Jalal Badawi on the right flank leaving the other flank. A fatal shot at the thief, who died shortly after.
Rescuing the wounded carabiniere remains to be determined by the possible presence of a second thief present at the scene of the robbery at the time of the shooting. An aspect that has not yet been verified, to indicate the possible presence of an accomplice, some voices heard both by the building’s doorman and by the carabinieri intervened, although it is not ruled out that the second thief was on the street acting as a ‘post’, with it he managed to lose track immediately after the arrival of the carabinieri to EUR.
Identified in Jalal Badawi, the 56-year-old Syrian was homeless, but appears to have lived in an occupied building in the Ostia area. Already known to the police, the victim had a criminal record for robbery, injury and evasion and was burdened by an expulsion decree.
