With Integrated Digital Education, the social contacts to which teachers are subject are increasingly growing. As face-to-face teaching is discontinued for some educational levels, private messages of communication between the school and teachers multiply. Some teachers report a real bombardment of messages, requests for connections for meetings, WhatsApp groups for service communications multiply.

The right to disconnect

From a regulatory point of view, regarding the disconnection of teachers, it should be remembered that in the point c8 of section 4, letter c), of article 22 of the CCNL School 2016-2018, it is written that they are subject to complementary negotiation by the Institute: “the general criteria for the use of technological tools for work at hours other than service hours, in order to achieve a greater reconciliation between work and family life ( right to disconnect) “.

Basically, at the level of negotiation between schools and educational institutions, or in the complementary contract of each school, the right to disconnect school personnel must be guaranteed to promote a greater reconciliation between work and family life.

It is implied that there can be no obligation on the part of the teacher and the school staff to remain connected to digital devices to receive and read notifications from the principal, his collaborators, any other teachers and secretarial staff. Once service ends, school personnel have no connection obligations, as long as these obligations exist during service hours.

Meetings via social media are illegitimate

At the time of distance education and the suspension of face-to-face teaching activities, teachers find themselves inserted in various WhatsApp groups and are bombarded with communications, information and circulars. In some schools, hopefully few, the schools hold college meetings via social media. Calling meetings via WhatsApp is an illegitimate way of notifying teachers, it could be an additional way, but the circular published in the manner indicated by a specific regulation approved by the School Council is always necessary.

There are WhatsApp groups of class councils, teachers, work groups, but now, with integrated digital education, it happens that students also have digital platforms in which to connect with their teachers and also the parents of the students connect remotely with teachers for school family interviews.

How many hours of connection per day?

Some teachers argue that for all the didactic and functional tasks of teaching, they are forced an average of 6 hours a day of connection, with important repercussions on sight and health in general.
