American researchers are studying the Sars-CoV-2 mutation that is wreaking havoc in this winter wave. Perhaps the vaccine is already useless.
The coronavirus vaccine may already be useless.
These reflections arise as a result of the work of researchers at the University of North Carolina who published a study on the D614G mutation of the virus in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The mutated virus, collected in southern Europe in spring (in short, it has the “Italian” mutation) has far greater capacities than the Chinese virus.
Tested in a test tube on various types of human respiratory tissue cells, the mutated virus replicated and reached amounts up to 8 times higher than the original virus, the one that appeared in Wuhan (source: corriere.it).
The same dynamics was recorded in the hamster experiment, since Dr. Ralph Baric, first author of the study.
It is striking to know that the mutated virus has only changed 1 of the 30,000 nucleotides it presents.
Vaccine.
The reflections of this study lead to the path of the commercial vaccine.
Although the current vaccine should be effective against the variant in question in the scientific study, it may no longer be effective against new mutations that may already be in circulation.
The researchers were hoping for many other mutations that could “enhance” this virus.
Meanwhile, in England they are dealing with a new mutation that is spreading even more fiercely, so much so that an emergency blockade has been decreed in London and all international flights have been canceled.
As Dr. Baric concludes, “it is important to immediately identify the emergence of new variants, especially when herd immunity or other active human interventions will alter the selective pressures on the virus genome.”
The coronavirus has changed and is now scarier. Total lockdown in England as of today. Now it is more virulent.
